This is a group buy for circuit boards and MOSFETs to make a DIY Classic Aleph clone amplifier. This board set is designed to work with the diyAudio store UMS mounting pattern. The boards are flexible for making different Aleph variants, and power supply boards are also available.

You can see the main thread here: Classic Aleph Amplifier for Modern UMS Chassis

Group Buy #2 is now CLOSED.
Group Buy #2 closed 13 March 2022.
GB#2 Sign up sheet is here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1w05jKUUwXxJUVIjuJXX3zeGQBRJD7ez2fiJqjWsOkS4/edit?usp=sharingLike Round #1 I'll reach out at the end to confirm order details, ask for email / name / shipping particulars.

GB#2 update 28 Feb 2022: I have purchased a bag of ZTX450's. There is a column to add those to your order in the GB#2 sheet to make life a little easier for folks. Stock is limited to 80 total. 2 needed per channel, 4 for a stereo pair. I'm not selling in bulk.

GB#2 Update 05 Mar 2022: I have matched a batch of FQP3P20. These are an alternative to IRF9610 for Q1-3. I'm adding these an option the sheet.

Post GB#2 Update - May 2022:
I have extra PCBs and MOSFETs available, please send a private message to me if interested. ZTX450's are gone.

I made a few tweaks...

- Added 0.1uF bypass cap footprints for the 220uF electrolytic caps. These are purely optional. I saw a post earlier in this thread pointing to a ZM post about this topic. Now the option is there to add bypass caps with 5, 7.5, or 10mm lead spacing. I'll put an option or 2 in the BOM (Kemet, Wima, etc.)

I was thinking about chassis options, and using 250mm width PCBs leaves no room for space on a 500mm deep chassis. I shaved a little off the end of the boards. It is now 60 x 247.5mm. Still tight...

So I made a 4 Up / 4 Down dedicated expansion card. This will make for an easier fit on the 2nd heatsink if 2 PCB's are side by side. Now use the main PCB + Expansion PCB. The expansion points are in the same order, just daisy chain and go.

See the updated group buy spreadsheet for any A2 or A60 builders who want to switch from 2 pairs of main boards to 1 pair main + 1 pair expansion.

The sign up sheet is updated. If you're in for Aleph 60 Monos and want to switch to Main PCBs + Expansion PCB's, update your rows in the sheet. I highlighted yellow in the sheet.

If you want to stay with 2 pairs of mains and no expansion PCB's, simply make a note or change the yellow in your row to white/nofill.

If you want to switch to 1 pair of mains and 1 pair of expansion PCB's, please update your row for 1 & 1. See the example in the picture and at the top of the udpated sheet.

An update on the MOSFETS - I still have plenty of matched 240's on the shelf to go based on the current totals. It looks like I'll be ordering a batch of 9610's for matching. The more in the batch, the closer the matches.

Some updates...

I included another sample option at the top of the group buy sheet and highlighted it in yellow. It's a mono configuration for A30/40. This option has the mono CRCRC Power supply boards, etc.

A draft of a build notes document for the A30 version is currently being reviewed. Thanks to those who have chipped in on reviewing so far, the help is much appreciated!

I started some content for the A60 build doc. In reality, it will be the A30 document with relevant changes.

Aleph 40 Challenge
Is there any brave soul willing to get out their slide rule to calculate the necessary changes to make the 4up/4down Aleph 40 amp? Donut size? Rail voltage? Changes to values on PCB? Source/Output resistor values? Other resistor values? Anything else? I'll up the ante: free boards AND MOSFETs for the A40 trailblazer.

The offer:
Free set of boards AND MOSFETs for one fearless amp builder who will:
Make an “Aleph 40” with “4-up/4-down” MOSFETs per PCB
Figure out component values, rail voltage, recommended transformer model number, etc. I will document this in a separate A40 Build doc.
Build within “reasonable” time - Done in Q1 2022
Share findings & post pictures in DIYAudio
I can ship prototype boards ASAP if you’re willing to solder ZTX450 on a tiny footprint. Feeling fearless?

If anyone else is interested in this Group Buy, please sign up by Jan 2nd.

I'll plan to begin coordinating with the people on the sign-up sheet on Jan 3rd. My kids are back to school that day, and I have the day off...

Orders will be placed for more MOSFETs and to the PCB fab during the week.

GB#1 on the classic Aleph for UMS is closed. Thank you all for participating - this is a bigger turnout than I expected. I'll be having a heck of a MOSFET matching party this month!

Next Steps
I'll start crunching numbers and reaching out to you all directly. Or send me a PM with:

DIY Audio name/handle
Real name & shipping address info
Paypal email address

A sentence or 2 on what you're looking to build. I want to make certain that I get the right stuff out to everyone, and this will help when I check against the sign up sheet. If there's any confusion we'll figure it out. Examples:

  • I'm building a Stereo Aleph 30 and need the Aleph boards, one power supply board, 2 rectifier/snubber boards, and all the MOSFETS.
  • I'm building a pair of Aleph 60 monoblocks and need Aleph boards + expansion boards, 2 mono power supply boards, 4 rectifier/snubber boards, 2 AC Cap / CL60 boards, and all the MOSFETS.
  • I'm building a Stereo Aleph 30 and need the Aleph boards, power supply board, 2 rectifier/snubber boards, and all the MOSFETS. Plus I need 2 additional power supply boards for other projects, plus 8x 240 and 8x 9240 MOSFETS for other projects.

Update for the day.

I started sending out messages ("Start a Conversation") to confirm order details. I hit the daily limit of direct messages I can send. Now I have 13 more people to go. If you didn't get a message or "conversation" yet, don't fret. I'll pick it up tomorrow.

It looks like shipping from USA to Australia is still restricted. I experienced this with a Group Buy last year for ACA filter PCB's. We'll repeat the same method this time. Anyone in Australia can coordinate directly with Gary S. I'll be sending him gerbers to get boards fabbed for Oz. You'll be on your own for MOSFETs. As an aside, I hope the Oz to USA mail is working when the new Midnight Oil LP is ready to ship in a few months. It's paid for, and I'm very much looking forward to it... If only they would extend their final tour to mimic 2017's Great Circle tour.
Once again, a big CHEERS to Gary for stepping up to help!

Hi Randy,
I'm starting to put together an order for all the other bits and pieces that I don't have lying around and have a question on the 3W resistors. The schematic you shared showed these as 0.47 ohm, but the original schematic and BOM has them as 1 ohm. Can you confirm which is the correct value to use.

Many thanks,
Gary

Gary,

For the 3W resistors, use the BOM in the build guide, not the schematic. The schematic is for the PCB layout and is based on A30 + an extra pair of outputs / current sources.

Do you have the build guide from the thread?
