Hello,
I plan the construction of a small BR box for my desk.
As a driver I have the Markaudio CHR-70 or the TangBand 4W-1320 selection.
The case has about 6 liters net.
Which driver is better suited?

Depending on what you consider a "small speaker", this is worth a look: http://flogatt.kilu.de/Hifi-Forum/Sarah von FloGatt.pdf (uses the W5-1611)

I have not heard the MA but expect it will be great based on comments. The Tangband is also a great speaker. Use a super tweeter to get the most from the top octaves. I live happily with a pair as my 'home theater' system. Neither is a bad choice. I'd purchase the MA's if i didn't already enjoy the TB's.

If you want to run it full range, I'd recommend the W4-1320. It has better top end of the two in my experience.
And, in fact, the better bottom too in 6 litres vented box tuned to about 75 Hz. The CHR-70 will need about 17 litres to play optimal bass.
I have first hand experience with W3-1364 which also is a bamboo cone. Excellent performer.

Hi Guys,
THe choice between my CHR-70 and TB's is naturally for each individual. So it's not for me to comment. However, some comments are technically incorrect:
Erling: -
Vented at 6 litres? I'm not sure if you're referring to the TB or CHR. For the new CHR-70, depending on who's software is used to make the calculation, expect a 6 litre BR box to deliver a port resonance of 60Hz, cut-off at 57Hz.
Port sizes would be around: 25.4-mm (1") Dia - length of 51-mm while a 40-mm Dia. would be 140-mm long.
17 litres? This is not an "optimal" BR box size. It's far too big. Power handling would also be limited. For the new CHR-70, expect optimal bass in BR at around 11 litres.
For the new CHR-70 specs - please see: http://www.markaudio.com/chr70
Cheers

I agree with Mark that the new revised CHR-70 is optimal in a 'around 11 litres' BR box. My WinISD calculation shows 11.5 litres and it will also better tolerate to shrink volume to 6 litres. I used specs for the original unit for my calculation above. I am sorry I had not observed the revision.

This maybe of interest:
Here's a small BR from Tony, 4.5 litres internal volume, made of re-constituted Oakwood. I'm trying these boxes at home via my 300B (8 watt) amp and Accuphase DP65 as the source.
These boxes are using the 2010 Rev. 2 CHR's. I understand the port is tuned to 66.5Hz, cut-off at 64. I'll put these boxes in the anechoic chamber hopefully in March. I'm keen to measure them since they sound sweet in the lower ranges, more than I'd normally expect for such a small box. This could partly to due to the combination of Oakwood, the warmth of the tubes in the amp and the Accuphase (some consider the DP65 to be warm/softer compared to current Accu's)
No filtering of anykind is deployed as this is part of my assessment of the Rev. 2 drivers prior to the next production run.
Cheers
Mark.

... so in the end what did you choose? I heve the same conflict and I have to choose soon.
Did you have the chance to hear both? What kind of music did you play with them?
I have the W4-1320 in the Cheap Trick 237 box mentioned previously in this thread as computer monitors and I find them really, really nice. Really good highs and imaging in a way that makes me shiver at times. 🙂 Bass is also good and powerful down to about 60, perhaps slightly lower. Below that there's not much, though.
I also have the EL70 (not the CHR-70 but they are close, if I understand correctly) in a pair of Desktop XLs. Those boxes give better bass extension, but are a lot larger, but the highs are not quite as nice IMHO.
Not sure if I'm helping. What I wanted to say is I haven't heard both, but I find the W4-1320 in the CT237 cabinets work really well also as nearfield speakers and I don't think you would be sorry for trying them out.

BTW did you try these drivers with a tripath amp? particullary the TA2020 amp with the TB W4-1320?
cheers
