I have tried the two chips as well and, like you, I was amazed about the performance considering the price. Both were hooked up to large book-case speakers and to floor-speakers. Even the small PAM8403 could handle the floor-speakers at normal listening level.
These chips are ideal for many less demanding purposes and provide absolute HiFi quality. OK, it is an old norm but still they sound much better than expected.
The chips can be supplied on various boards (most very cheap) and the boards are ideal for first time DIY's just to get some (very cheap) hands-on experience.
What you learn is not proportional to what it costs.

I'm pretty sure they make even good mid end amps if you build a descent power supply with big capacitors, small heat sink specially the bigger one. For a pair on no nonsense bookshelf speakers for example. Due to the small form factor the distance between the chip and the filter components is very close that makes being on a budget even making the amp to perform better 🙂
I also bought several of these. First time a few, just for testing. Amazed with their performance, I bought immediately other 30 pcs of small and 10 pcs of the big one. For me and my neighbours also. And I have another example of a good amplifier,
TPA3116D2 2X50W peak (2x15W HiFi). It works at 24-26V and sounds absolutely perfect.
Costs about $6-$8.

TPA3110, TPA3118, TPA3116 and TDA8932 are very cheap and amazingly good as well. Ideal for DIY beginners.
Start with something a bit more simple and very cheap and when you start having a feeling for DIY work, continue with the more complex constructions.
