Interesting read.. looks like if you are
going to sink $$$ into an expensive LCD projector, you are better off getting DLP in the long run. Good thing us DIY try to do it the cheap way... no way I'm buying an expensive LCD projector !

That review is bunk.
First of all, the tests where done by obvious DLP lovers (the creators of it themselves!).
Plus, they don't even tell you which LCD projectors where tested!
And another thing, that is for LCDs with extremely small LCDs in them. For our DIY projectors with 15" panels inside, I think it would be a completely different story because our light is less concentrated across the screen.

yeah i tend to agree with psionic, i think that study on that page is a pile of horse dung but anyway realy i think the technology should be going into the light source more than the dlp or lcd right now if this is the case of the lights degrading the overal system, i have a mobile and like most mobiles it see's alot of sun, ive had it for 3 years and its in the sun all day every day, and my lcd is still alright lol mind u though its black and white with a green back light but it would be interesting to see what would happen if i get a colour lcd mobile and give it the same torture, heat , light ect, not quite the same thing but what is more powerful than the sun? also personally with our diy projectors i dont think we will have any probs aslong as we use a uv filter and a ir filter and our light source isnt so concentrated in such a small area like the pro's projectors

check out this article it has a calculation at the bottom some of us could find useful

DLP is falling behind in the doller per pixel compared to LCD. Granted, I guess there are XGA DLP projectors out there. But there are a handful of LCD UXGA projectors and I can't find a sing DLP projector that goes that high. And UXGA isn't even 1080i.
But that aside, I don't see any benefit to LCD over DLP. DLP has much better black levels, and study or not, the polarizers in LCDs will wear out eventually. Now that study doesn't reflect reality because 4000 hours in a year is ridiculous. Nobody would run a projector that much. And in order to achieve that, you'd have to leave the thing running for
The quality of LCDs are being driven by the laptop and monitor market. TI basically has to make improvements to DLP on its own, which has been a problem I think. I think DLP is the future, but not for a while. I'm still annoyed at TI and their fantasies of tricking movie theatres to buy XGA DLP projectors. What a joke. They can't even get home theatre people to convert because it's still behind CRTs. Like anyone who's last name isn't Lucas would want to replace 35mm film with XGA. Even if DLP was up to 10 megapixels (which it won't be for a long time), the color reproduction still can't match film.

yeah i prety much agree, u cant beat film! and the bigger the film the better reso so i have learnt correct me if im wrong, anyway i plan to get a reasonably cheap dlp from ebay in the future, and im going for that high reso ohp diy, just because ohp's are bulky doesnt mean u cant hide them in somthing, mine will be in funiture like a false speaker enclosure, like a false rear center standing sub done pro ofcourse and who would know whats in there? lol anyway some time ago last year the french, germans and spanish are working on a new film for lcd tech, that wont fade or decolourise, dont ask me for the link as i have lost it in time but i do remember what it said and with that being said maybe in just a matter of months a new type of lcd will be produced so i dont think lcd is over yet. We all know technology its a waiting game and if i have to wait i will lol the link i posted i mainly posted as it states crt can last upto 10000hrs before the guns go and i think thats great at a desinated screen size, also the table at the bottom shows us a calculation we can do that obviously the pros use to get desired results and life exspectancy without over driving the projector.

take these results with a grain of salt
Yes, BUT it is important to note:
LCD projectors can be made for long life use, especially when designers focus on proper cooling.
AND
NEC's blue panels have a U/V filter to help protect against harmful light energy.
hmmmmmm ok so the uv is the biggest prob as we know, ok u can buy mh bulbs with a uv coating to block the majority of uv, now what about these projector bulbs that cost $300 and up? do they imploy the same coating? maybe they dont and maybe they ought to help stop the lcd from fading in long term use, u know how things are these days, everyone isd out to make a buck and its always the little man who gets ripped and i would have to say that the companies who do make these projectors could build them better, i mean ok the specs are good for the majorty for the picture, but why dont they make them last? why? because we are meant to go out and upgrade cos the thing packs up lol thats how they make money, its the exact same in cars, most car dealers make more money in repairs and servicing than selling the car, thats a fact and realy i wouldnt be too worried about an lcd changing colour cos the amount of usage the a home person would use it for the thing might not even change colour in the end, these guys had it on continuosly and i bet paint, u and me, or anything else would change colour too being in that type of light for 3months strait lol
