cheap, but good performing DAC? possible?

I just got a good deal on a pretty decent transport (sonic frontiers SFT-1 for $150), and i have two options: i can build a decent little dac for it for cheap, or i can sell it to either upgrade my DVD-player, or get a cd player.

so my question for those in the know... can i build a good sounding dac for cheap (not design, but just build a known design)? i of course have many tools, even some cases, and probably parts for a power supply, etc...

if that's the case, i can just keep it. but of course i need to finish my other projects first.

DDDAC

You might want to try the DDDAC http://www.dddac.de

Its possible to put this together for about $150. You can buy a kit of parts from him or just certain parts or just the board. Or if you are into making your own boards you can do that yourself.

There are several threads on this DAC here in the digital section.

The DDDAC is a VERY good sounding DAC blowing away many competitors costing WAY more.

I'm running mine off of a Toshiba 3950 DVD player sitting on DIY roller bearings (cost: $5!), the combination is extrordinary.

Is this good?

If the sound first :

OS:CS8414 + AD1955 + bjt I/V + CLC filter + emitter follower output (or you can use TUBE output)

NOS:CS8414 + TDA1541 + bjt I/V + ClC filter + emitter follower output (or you can use TUBE output)
