🙁 My lovely Celestion SL-6, one woofer is sounding distorted. I re-did the crossover sometime back and suspect the tweeter cutting out is due to a dry joint as a tap on the top and it works again.

This woofer problem, not sure is dry joint related or more damage maybe ? I not sure if i should hunt down another woofer, cost vs longivity !😕

I noticed a pair of Dynaudio reference 42 on ebay here, but pretty sure they would not be in the same league as the Celestions

😕

Lovely speakers indeed and well worth repairing!

Firstly the problem of the tweeter cutting out: Re-do the solder joints on the crossover. If a printed circuit is involved, check there are no cracks in the copper tracks. Also check that the connections at the tweeter terminals are good.

Secondly the problem of the woofer distortion: Firstly, check that the connections at the woofer terminals are good. Next step would be to disconnect the woofer from the crossover and connect it directly to the speaker terminals. If it no longer sounds distorted then investigation of the crossover at component level will be required. If it still sounds distorted then the woofer could be in need of replacement.

Thanks Galu,
Tweeter issue i suspect this is where i use very fine wire to connect tweeter to crossover.
As for woofer (below is the update) i gently pressed the sides of the woofer and some rubbing but that maybe due to the fact i was not pressing both sides. Either way i think is best to go over tweeter and woofer connections

Does the LF cone move smoothly when gently pushed?

Chris
Thanks Chris. It appears to be okay but made a scraping sound, maybe due to the fact i pressed on one side of the woofer and not evenly.

update

I decided to try the Celestions, ran it on low at first and mid volume which is around 2.5 volume on my Technics V8 amp, they sounded crip and fine, even problem tweeter was working😕,

I still think i should investigate terminals crossovers and check if woofer is fine. pressing evenly both sides

If the problem speaker sounded fine when you decided to try it again, then the individual drivers would appear to be OK (but see my note below).

Chris's suggestion will confirm that the woofer's voice coil is not damaged. When the cone is pushed gently and evenly on opposite sides there should be no scraping noise.

Suggest you leave the speaker running for a while to see if the problem reoccurs. If it does then check all wiring and connections, both those inside the speaker cabinet and those from the Technics amp.

Note that sometimes the wires beween the individual driver terminals and their internal voice coils can become intermittent due to flexure or corrosion.
