cdp word clock hacking

apologies if this comes out a bit noob-ish... what I'm hoping to do is use the VCXO word clock I've built in my relatively low-end CDP. See to me, it seems fairly simple - open up the case, solder out the existing clock circuit, and replace it with a cable going to a BNC connector (via an isolation transformer - any recommendations?) that I screw onto the back of the case. I'm quite shaky on modding existing kit and audio kit in general, my background being CMOS logic, and discrete at that, so questions of power supplies and ground loops are the real holes in my knowledge.
Seeing as CDs only ever use 44.1kHz (right?) i'll presumably not need to read the clock frequency from the SPDIF out to set the word clock, ie I won't need to mod my word clock to have an input.
Again, sorry if I sound a bit thick, i feel it's best to be humble and never get stuff wrong than assume, especially when you're breaking warranties!
Cheers
Kit
