CDM-1 Laser Mech problem

The player, a Marantz CD84 was working well apart from the tray, which I replaced the belt and upgraded capacitors in the audio and psu. I noticed the tray was out a bit though.

Anyway, while working i rested the mech on the cabinet upright to look at the capacitors and cleaned it, it slipped and dropped couldve this ruined the laser?🙁

I power it up and without a disc and it says error, i load a disc it spins at high revs the motor, and stop doesnt stop it, so i have to turn off the power - i think I have the wiring around the correct way with the jumpers😕. Really is confusing, off to take it all apart again. Any thoughts greatly appreciated

Thanks Sam

Allow me to congratulate you first! 😀
First, please do not try to measure the laser diode with a DMM as this could definitely kill it.
I think that some mechanical damage is done, including possibly the misalignment of RAFOC (swing arm) or focus motor assembly, as well as damage to the optical system - lenses and prism.
When inserting a disc, does the swing arm move to the center? Does the lens bob up and down before the disc begins to spin uncontrollably? Does the swing arm move freely and bounce back and forth?
Check the bottom spindle bearing if it has moved out of place in case the transport landed on disc platter.
Also, double check the connections, there might be an electronic fault which the logical circuit detects upon power on.

EDIT: I have just read your post in a different topic with the same problem but there you did not mention the transport falling. So it appears that the transport fault is not connected to the accident, right?

😀 Thank you Willi

Yes, i went over the hole player, checked the service manual and cables were in the correct positions, though i noticed a few dry joints (possible maybe) touched them up with solder. Also on the laser pcb, noticed clip was very loose and i checked that the solder was a bit way from the board, i fixed this, and hot glued it so it wouldnt wobble so much.

After all that i put her back, and turned the old girl on 😀 she is playing and tracking quickly, it only a short test, but she changed tracks quickly, though she never liked cdrs, but will play them, sometimes skipped near the end of the disc😀
