CD-63 KI Troubleshooting help needed

Hi

My Cd-63 KI player has developed a fault and I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction on how to get it fixed.

The left channel has started to distort and crackle a small amount when playing CD's. Along with this I've also noticed ( what I can only best describe as) a popping sound also from the left channel when the player is switched on, and when changing tracks. This popping noise also occurs when the CD automatically moves on from one track to another as well. None of the above symptoms occur on the right channel.

I've taken the board out of the player and check the solder joints and cleaned the contacts but no change.

The one further thing i've established is if I connect the digital out using either coax or optical to my mini disc player and use it to feed the signal to the amp then the left channel is fine. So I'm assuming the problem lies in the output stage for the analog.

I tracked down the service manual for the CD player through this site but to be honest I'm pretty new to this kind of thing and dont really know where to start looking for the source of the problem.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly received.

Thanks

Guessing one of the muting transistors are broken.
This would explain the popping and the track change noise.
If you can live with the noise during track changes remove both muting transistors, do not know if there actually are any in the CD 63.

It should pop more at high music levels if they are broken.

It appears that the muting transitors are at fault!

Thanks for the suggestions and having removed them, the output is working great again.

One unfortunate side effect is there now appears to be a build up of static now when the player is touched after it is switched on.

The obvious question is - Would removing the tranistors cause the static issue?

Finally , they are there for a reason so is there a down side to removing them or would the best option be to replace them rather than just removing them.

Thanks

keep them out

hi mate i modify the 63 cd players and i can get them sounding like a cd player costing £1000 if not better in most cases, if you have the clicks and pops through the speaker's when turning off and on which you should have, just turn down the amps volume when switching off

😉

The BEST option would be to replace them with relays, if you don't like the noises. The non-KI models seems to fair better, noise wise, without the mutting transistors for some reason:cannotbe: from what i read on here anyway. see here for more info.

Here's the manual for your CD player, courtesy of user ALW.

And some upgrade tweaks from user KWY on the TNT site.
