Castle Trent Tweeters same as Castle Durham II?

Hello, just a question in the community,
I have old Castle Trent Speakers (Gold Edition) and for my impression the tweeters are not working anymore. I have also old Castle Durham II Speakers. The tweeters look exactly like the tweeters for the Trent-model. I this true? Are they similar and can I use them for the Trent with the same brilliant results than the regular Trent-Tweeters?
Thanks for further informations,
Martin Napp

Castle did use the same tweeter in different models. I would bet they are identical.

Are there no identifying markings on the rear of the tweeters?

It would be worthwhile checking whether the Trent tweeters are, indeed, faulty.

This can be done by swapping them with the working ones in your Durhams.

If the Trent tweeters work OK in the Durham enclosures then the problem is likely to lie with the Trent crossovers.

If it turns out that both pairs of tweeters are OK then report back and we can take it from there.

Hello Galu,
I did it the other way and put the Durham-Tweeters in the Trents. For my impression the high notes are now more pointed than before. So, they seems to be different - or the old Trent-Tweeters lost their grip over the last years. But is this possible?

If the tweeters contain ferrofluid (for voice coil cooling and resonance damping purposes) then it may have dried up over time causing the tweeters to stop 'tweeting'.

It is possible, with some tweeters, to remove the old, dried up ferrofluid and replace it with new.

Here's how: Replace ferrofluid in tweeter - a B&W tweeter as an example

You would have to remove the decorative front cover of one of your tweeters to, hopefully, gain access to the bolts holding the assembly together.

Personally, I would look into replacing the tweeters with modern equivalents.

STOP PRESS!

I've found an image of an 'unclothed' Trent II tweeter.

I don't think ferrofluid replacement is an option - replacement tweeters would be the best option.

I found the 'naked' picture on this previous thread where the Monacors were found to be good replacements for the Trent tweeters: Castle Trent 2 Tweeter

Note the final outcome in post #24 where attenuating resistors of value 1.0 ohm and 39 ohm were added to reduce the output of the Monacor slightly.

If you were to find you needed them, the type of resistors are those available here: Ceramic Resistors

In the attached diagam, R1 = 1 ohm and R2 = 39 ohm.

Hello Galu,
thank you so much for your detailed help and advice. To replace the ferrofluid looks to complicated for me and I think to buy new tweeters or try to get some second hand. I learned a lot and appreciate your informations. Agioan, thank you so much! Martin

Thanks for the thanks, Martin! I just thought I'd give you the full details so you can ponder on your future possibilities

I don't think it would be possible to replace the ferrofluid in those tweeters, even if we were certain it was actually there in the first place.

One final recommendation: I would not buy second hand because there's no guarantee that they will perform any better than the ones you have!

P.S. I owned two different models of Castle speakers way back in the seventies (Clyde and Richmond if I remember correctly) and I believe they were fitted with those plastic cone tweeters. They were manufactured with real wood veneers at an affordable price.

Thanks @Urlocksoim!

Could you describe, perhaps by referring to the image in post #8, how you dismantled the plastic cone tweeter in order to clean out the ferrofluid?

P.S. I hope your Castle Dover loudspeakers (stock image shown below) will start singing again for you soon!
