The HAKKO FX888 has been updated to xxxD status, which incorporates several updates on the FX888 unit. ESD safe, 50~480C / 120~899F, maintains +/- 1C tip temperature. Good for SMD and Thru-hole assembly.
Temperature unit & soldering iron kit, HAAKO P/N FX888D-23BY.
For a limited time Active Tech Electronics is selling the unit for $C 135.
If you live in Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto, or Burnaby you can drop in to the store directly (google Active Tech for addresses). If not, Tip Top Electronic Supply is an independent affiliate based in Winnipeg and has the best options for online ordering (accepts PayPal as well as CC's versus MC/VISA only, and uses Canada Post Expedited (tracked, insured) instead of UPS Ground for lower shipping costs and faster delivery). If you're not blessed with a HST and you live outside Manitoba, no PST will be due as they only have the single location.
I paid $C 160, with 5% GST (no PST due) and shipping included, which is equal to $US 119.00.

Authorized HAKKO dealer, that information right from eMail correspondence I have with Tammy Flores of HAKKO USA, the North American distributor.
It's interesting you say there are knock-offs of the 888D; I have only seen the Chinese counterfeit 936's, which has been out of production from HAKKO Japan for more than five years. Can you provide a link to a fake 888 for sale somewhere on the web?
I see Maplin Ireland sells them for 209 euros ($C 301.00) plus shipping. US MSRP is $100.00 ($C 134.00); Canadian MSRP is $C 160.00.
Ordering from the US is usually out of the question, however, as the USPS has raised international shipping twice (2009 and 2016). Shipping via USPS International would be $US 50 today (an increase of 500% from 2008), plus GST (5%) and Canada Post brokerage fee ($C 8) for a total of $C 200.21).
UPS or FedEx shipping is higher still (UPS would charge about $US 40 shipping, a $C 30.45 brokerage fee, $C 5 to "loan" the recipient the 5% GST of $7.50 even though they actually don't pay that until the 15th of the month following delivery, the $C 7.50, another $C 8 for a COD fee to collect their fees from you on delivery, and a mystery charge of $C 10, total $US 140 / $C 188 plus $C 60.50, total $C 248.95).

Just search eBay for sellers from China. They are so close to the real thing you have to wonder if some of the parts are made in the same factory https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvOJL8aAUO8
The 240v versions do seem a little more expensive, best price i found in Ireland is this Hakko Digital soldering station FX888D

Interesting. I would never buy any HAKKO item from a Chinese vendor (including tips) but it's interesting that they've started on the 888D. I do buy a lot of stuff from the PRC but no semiconductors, no passive components, no wire or cable, no memory or batteries, and definitely no branded products; anything HAKKO certainly qualifies. Bona Fide Chinese brand names get a look, that's about it.
One typical give-away with Chinese counterfeits is for some reason, they just can't bring themselves to use proper screws. So a quick examination is usually enough to spot the fakes.

It's arrived, I like it. Ordered on Thursday, shipped on Friday, delivered on Monday, tracked, insured, signature required, $C 17 ($US 12.63) shipping charge via Canada Post.
November 03 2016 manufacture date.
If I get a little time, I can post some photos; anyone who would like to see them, post here and I'll get it up. Some might find it helpful to help identify counterfeits.

Wow...
On a side note, since 230 / 240V versions of Hakko products got mentioned - I can confirm that prices are pretty steep over here in Europe. A few years ago, I ended up importing my 888 plus the desoldering pistol unit from overseas - was still cheaper, even including shipping, custom tax and step-down transformer. Go figure...

Nothing special, you can tell I confirmed operation by the heat signature on the tip, but note the box outer cover, which doesn't come with offshore versions, counterfeit or otherwise.
