I'm thinking about Monacor as an alternative for the tweeters of my new enclosures. Can someone recommend some good ones, price under 40 Euros?
Still looking for alternatives to the G20SC ? 😉
It´s under 40€ BTW.:

A highly regarded and "good for the money"-tweeter from Monacor seems to be the HGH258FN.
Often used in the "cheap tricks" from K+T and Hobby Hifi magazines.
Also look here.
Still with the CT142?
Good luck!

Thanks for the tip. I'm not building the CT142 anymore, just a standard tower bass reflex enclosure with W170S as mid-bass and I'm still looking for a good and cheap tweeter. The mid-bass has been ordered a few days ago but I still can't decide with the tweeter, the G20SC is over my budget, but I'm still trying to make an effort and buy it.
E-bay is not an option because transportation and taxes are huge, that will get to double that price until it gets to me. There's a Visaton representative here and I can buy them at the bulk price anyway, but it's still too expensive for me.
And about that Monacor tweeter, I can't find it on their catalog...
Another thing: availability is a problem here, and my choises are reduced to Visaton and Monacor. There was a slight hope for a Vifa/Peerless/Scan-Speak representative but that hope is long gone.

Sorry mate, the HGH258FN is a Mivoc chassis. My fault.😕
If you can´t wait until you saved some bucks for the G20SC why don´t you buy the SC10 from Visaton.
It lately got good critiques in a mini monitor from Hobby Hifi.
If I were you I´d use a tweeter from Visaton and see if there exist a crossover for the combination.
Otherwise you might end up paying more for the crossover-parts than the supposedly cheap tweeter.
No TL anymore?just a standard tower bass reflex enclosure with W170S

Hi!
I have a Monacor DT-99 crossed with a single cap at 4200 Hz.It is a good tweeter for the money, round 15 Euros. I also heard DT-100 which is round 25 euros and it is better, but the Monacor tweeters who should be better than these two are: DT-25N and DT-250,also DT-107.
I haven't heard G20SC from Visaton, but it should be really good as I was told.I've heard Visaton G25FFL and it is very very good.
DT-99 and DT-100 are not that good but they are half price from that Visaton,so...
DT-250 is round 40 E,it is titanium, specs look good, they claim that it doesn't have any nasty metal-ish resonance.I've heard only one titanium driver in my life and didn't like the sound, but maybe that was due to x-over.
I would go for DT-25N (22,50E) or DT-107 (20,50E), in that order
Both should be really nice.
Both are silk dome,as G20SC is,and they are way cheaper.I personally find Monacor tweeters as good buy for litlle money.
Report us on results.Where do you want to cross the tweeter?
Cheers

Also check:
DT-28N,DT-300.DT-109. They are all round 20-25 Euros.
My favorite would still be DT-25N since I heard only good things about it and it looks most interesting.
What will be the box volume?
Crossover network?
Also check DT-19SU,DT-119.They are 19mm, G20SC is 20mm,all the ones I recomended are 25 or 30 mm.I don't know what will sound better. They should all be good.I only have positive experince with monacor tweeters. It could be a good speaker if you do it properly.
It could be good to measure T/S parameters for that Visaton driver before putting it in any box.
Hope that it helps

I briefly used the DT28-n crossed to a 4" midrange (MSH116/4) and KEF 8" woofers before I got a pair of Tannoy dual concentrics and they sounded really good crossed actively with my SB-Live and the kX drivers at 400/ 2.5 kHz and chip-amps ripped from PC speakers. They did sound a little harsh crossed under 2kHz at high levels though, but nothing out of the ordinary for a 1" dome. I plan to re-visit this setup in the near future as I plan on adding some surround speakers for films and games.
The MDF for the box is already cut, too late. I was assured that deviations form specs are minimal with Visaton drivers, I'll measure them anyway just to know...
I'd like to cross the tweeter at 2.5 KHz, since W170S has an ugly resonance at 4.5 KHz, I wouldn't like to get near it.
Thanks for the tips guys!
Edit: the box volume will be around 40 litres, and the crossover will be 3rd order Linkwitz (I think, I haven't decided yet), with zobel for the woofer, and maybe resonance correction for the tweeter too. Btw, is using 3rd order for the woofer and 2nd order for the tweeter OK? I had good results in simulations with this configuration.
Edit2: I kinda like DT-107, it looks cool, and it's pretty cheap too. And there is another problem I forgot to tell you about: the holes for the drivers are already cut, and I'm restricted to bigger tweeters 😀 Opps, stupid me. The cutout is 64 mm for G20SC, so DT-107 will fit best. I have to decide until monday whether to buy it or not, someone can get them at the bulk price. Tough choice.

I don't know whether third order network is good for this speaker. It should work as I see it on specs. Well experiment with it,but this 4.5 kHz resonance could be the least problem. You have a constant raise of sensitivity from 200 Hz towards that resonance. On the x-over point, you'll probably have some +5dB.If you add baffle step, you''ll probably get even higher.Good solution, the way I see it is pretty simple.Just divide 115 with baffle width in meters. You'll get point where baffle step appears.I guess you have 20-25 cm baffle so it would be round 500Hz.On that point make a BSC network which will attenuate the frequncies from 500Hz above. This way maybe you won't even need the low pass filter for that woofer to solve that resonance,or maybe if it would be still audible, you can just put simple 1 ost order to cancel that resonance.
You can get away with 1st order on the tweeter also.I don't see need for 3 order on tweeter if you cross it high, and you could probably cross it round 4kHz.Well,it depends if this circuit above will work,if it does ,I think you can make a simple 1 st order for the tweeter.
Maybe this idea seems strange to you,but it should work better than two 3 order filters + you will definitely suffer baffle step loss problem which you will have to solve somehow.
Dt-107 should work nice.If you can get it for bulk price, don't hesistate. It is worth 20 Euros definitely,I don't know by what price are you getting it.
Hope I helped a bit.I would also like to hear comments from others on this x-over proposal.

I stayed with the G20SC after all, I'll just have to save some more.
About filter orders, BSC and all... First of all, I can't really understand this need for BSC. Why? Because I can't see what is it that passive BSC does better than active equalization. And since I'll use the PC as source, BSC is solved. Maybe people consider it something intrinsic to the box and use it, but since baffle loss depends on room placement, I don't really think of it as something that belogs to the speaker.
And about 1st order for the tweeter. I think it depends on the tweeter. With G20SC I tried various combinations with 1st order for tweeter and 2nd and 3rd order for woofer and I wasn't able achieve satisfactory results. 2nd order seems to be the best. 3rd order is overkill like yous said, there's nothing that 3rd order does better in my case.

Hi mr-push-pull!
Baffle step will affect you if you don' t place your speakers next to wall,if you'll keep them away you'll definitely suffer baffle loss. You can solve it via active eq as you proposed,no problem🙂
If you did experiments with that tweeter than you should know it better than me 😎
