Is there any reason that Left-, Right-, and Gnd need to be kept separate to the preamp? Could a standard single pair + shield cable be used with a 5-pin phono DIN?
Well Decca cartridges have historically been 3 wire, so it's been done. I personally prefer to think of each coil as having it's own current loop and it's dirty to share a common, but then again I only consider the tonearm itself to be grounded. It's not necessarily optimal but it works. Pretty sure B&O used to use 5 pin DIN on their turntables so that would have been a 3 wire connection.
Its kept separate till the pre input the eliminate any potentially induced hum to otherwise very low signal awaiting significant amplification.
But cheap turntables do that all the time, hence no separate ground on the back.
I have done it, once you connect the grounds, you should amplify. Ideally with built in pre.
