Can I use this torroidal for an Aleph build?

Hello,

I happen to have a spare torroidal transformer at hand, that is rated at 32-0-32 Volts secondaries and 850VA power.

Do you think I can succesfully accomodate it into powering any of the Aleph builds?

Thanks in advance,
Nick.

I have build several projects, but never a power amplifier.
Mostly line stages, RIAA correctors (tube/opamp based) and headphone amplifiers.

The power supply will be regulated, probably a PCB design that is a match for the power amplifier. I was thinking of an Aleph build, but from what I gather the are none that can accomodate exactly the 32-0-32 AC that I have on the secondaries.

The closest I see is for the Aleph 5 which has 34 Volts DC on its rails and uses a matching power supply that takes 28-0-28 Volts AC.

If the voltage on the rails is higher, lets say 38 Volts DC instead of 34, would that be incompatible?

The main negative with an 850 VA transformer with those secondaries would be, you probably won't want to exceed a bias of 2.5 A per channel which is still ok, just not the most optimal for an Aleph design with 38 V rails.

When I say not optimal I mean in terms of efficiency, not sound quality.

It will still sound excellent.

May as well get a 5U x 500mm chassis just to give you plenty of cooling capability.

if you insisted to use the transformer, you could save 100US$ for a new proper transformer. But you could end up to spend more to buy a big chassis and heat sink, and cost more electricity in long run and stress your semis etc.

I would say it is not a good idea.

You need to calculate all by yourself.
