Can a EV MT4 be scaled down ? (4x 12")

Hi !

a good friend just got four 12" drivers by Renkus Heinz for free (lucky b'stard)

We do not know the type or model, but the magnet is larger than the cone, wich truly looks the bizz.
We reacon they can take 700W each easily.

We want to make a small-but-nasty sub for PA use, mono.

We are wondering if Electro Voice's MT4-cabinet can be scaled down to 12" drivers
(mainly because of the sheer beauty of those mighty magnets)

Anyone capable of predicting what would happen ?

Cheers,

Empee

12" subwoofers seem to be a new and popular thing in pro audio. Renkus-Heinz, Community, and EAW all have subs based on 12" drivers.

Why don't you just build a pair of subs with 2x12" each? Each one should go nicely underneath a 12" or 15" two-way cabinet, or something like a Community SLS920. There's nothing really special about the Electro-Voice design - it's essentially a vented box, designed and tuned in exactly the same way a vented box is done*. The manifold, as I understand it, just increases output in the upper bass range, and only very slightly. You could even do a dual-12" manifold-type design if you really want to try a manifold. If small and nasty is your goal, then I'd tune (the vented section) around 50 Hz, and set your DSP processor's HPF at around 40 Hz. Just make sure to post the plans here online once you've finished doing the design.

*That said, it won't be enough to simply 'shrink' the MTL4 to fit 12" drivers -- you'll need to figure out entirely new tunings.
