I figured someone here would think this was cool. I was up at my local electronics shop, and i picked up a 4x6550 amp that was sitting on the counter for cheap. A sweet deal, since it had old Tung Sol and Sylvania US tubes in it... which are probably worth what i paid for it by themselves. ( let alone the iron on this thing, which is massive ) It bench tested in at 120 watts output on the meter.
It had "10-14-1974" scratched into it. Someone built this thing literally 40 years ago, and it stayed that way until i got my hands on it.
I looked it over and realized pretty quickly that it was ALMOST a copy of a Sunn 2000S, but someone had omitted the entire first gain stage and tone stack. They were probably using it as a sub amp or something
Anyways, i finished the job - wired up the tone stack, and built the remainder of the missing parts to make it a true Sunn 2000S copy.
I also ordered a cage to go over it, and some handles for the sides, so it will be a bit prettier and better protected when i gig with it.

Love it, and George (Tubelab) will love it more!
I am going to guess that the massive iron on that beast is Stancor. Please please build a nice cab over that. And of course matched to an appropriate stack.
Very nice job
Have fun!!!

Considering the riveted construction, though we cannot see the underside, it looks commercial. So instead of someone's clone, might the thing actually be an old Sunn slave head? I am more familiar with their solid state slave heads, don't know what if any history there is.
Those are pop rivets. It's not commercial. There's mistakes in it and so forth. There's an extra 12ax7 socket that someone mounted and decided not to use.
Also, based on how effing heavy it is, i would have used a Steel chassis... but i get the feeling this guy ( 40 years ago ) had a spare aluminum one hanging around with a lot of extra holes drilled in it, and just used what he had laying around.
He MAY have built it to be a sunn slave amp, because it wouldn't need the whole first gain stage / tone stack in that case, so that's a good theory.
I did actually look up the brand of the OT, PT and Choke... and they are all Schumacher ( which is a good vintage brand and used in many amps from that era ).
The FP style cap can in there ( which i have left alone but all stages were dead in, so i had to wire in all new big dady sprague atom based 20u / 600v filters ) is the one out of a Dynaco ST70, i believe. It's even got stamped Dynaco on it.
