Budget bass-woofer DIY versus Dayton sub-800

So I'd like to try a multiple sub setup in my living room. General listening levels are not too high and it's an apartment so I'm not really concerned about high levels and room shaking bass. Just want nice clean definition in bass. Not too concerned about the 20-40hz range.

I was going to do DIY sealed subs but now I'm considering the off the shelf option.

Comparing this 8" Dayton HO bundle (Dayton Audio 8" Reference Series HO Subwoofer and Cabinet Bundle) to the Dayton SUB-800 (Dayton Audio SUB-800 8" 80 Watt Powered Subwoofer) do you guys think there will be an appreciable difference in sound quality if I'm not after earth shaking levels or really low extension? Or in other words what do I get by spending 2x more by going DIY here? I plan of getting 3-4, and messing with placement and EQ (miniDSP) to get as flat response as I can manage. On the DIY side I'm short on time/space to do any woodworking, so it would need to be a flat pack enclosure, and WAF factors limit enclosures to about 1ft^3.

Thanks for any thoughts/comments/suggestions!

My thought is that those seem a nice bargain, but 80 watts is not a lot. All else being equal-which it never is-I'd prefer a beefier rack amp driving a bunch of these. On a woofer-per-watt basis the Dayton 10s and 12s give you a lot more, but then you probably knew that already and can't fit them?

One thing I wonder is how the Daytons compare to similar spec'd/priced Polk models...

You couldn't DIY a sub as good as the SUB-800 for that price, so it just depends on if you want to spend more for higher quality and capability. For $300 you'd have 240 watts going to three 8" woofers spread out around your room. Should be enough to shake your apartment walls and you don't have to do anything but click "order".

Personally, I start to twitch if I have to listen to speakers in my house that I didn't build, but if you don't have that problem, go the easy route.
