I have a Toshiba I bought a few years back and is currently my dvd player and cd player. I'm interested in a quality dvd player that will last forever. This is why I'm looking for HDMI or DVI output. DVI seems to be a bit more common, but HDMI can be converted to DVI. My budget tops out at $500. I've done a few searches, but little is found and is a broad topic online. The other day I was flipping through the Crutchfield catalog and saw this . Not spending all my money, but thats fine with me. The DAC is not as high as hoping, my current one which is about 4 years old is 24bit. One main feature I'm looking for is SACD. I managed to buy 2 SACDs thinking my DVD player could play them, definately wrong, and as a matter of fact my computer doesn't even play SACDs. (Really looking forward to heard those SACDs, one of them is a Bruce Springsteen album which neither my dad nor I had ever heard)
What do you all suggest? I've also looked at all of the "Super Cheap DVD player" threads in chip amp, although those have all the features I want, they don't have DVI or HDMI outputs. I don't know much about dvd players and the technology so I'm not sure what companies I should be looking for, if any. Is there anything I should read to learn more about dvd players, or any info I should pay attention to?
edit: DivX compatable is also preferable.
Thanks a lot,
Josh

the samsug has DVI out, but has gotten awful reviews. Everytime you turn the DVD player off, when you turn it back on you have to reset the output info. So when it turns off, it pretty much deletes all of it's memory. I saw a comparison compared to the Denon 1910, which got much better quality reviews and has DVI out, but cannot play SACD. The next step up is the 2910, which has a BurrBrown upgrade and has gotten awsome reviews and ofcourse has DVI output, and plays SACD is priced at I believe $600. I'm not afriad to buy from ebay either, but since it is new, prices are pretty high.
Thanks,
Josh
edit: after saying this, I checked out ebay, and I found one under $500 (over after shipping and handling), but this has HDMI and DVI output, and here it is.
Thanks,
Josh

I wouldnt spend any money on a player at the moment.
Lots of stuff coming out: HD dvds, WM9 encoded, blu-ray, etc.
Although 150$ isnt a huge investment...

I was unaware that HD dvd's were coming out. Where can I get some information on that? How long until they come out? Do you think that electronic companies are going to make special dvd players? Are most dvd players going to be able to read the discs? Do they have finer grooves?
What is blu-ray?
Sorry for all the questions
Thanks,
Josh

They will be releasing new players, old ones cant read either new format. Both blu-ray and HD dvd players should be backwards compatable with standard DVDs though. But I doubt a blu-ray player will play a HD-DVD, but who knows.

Also PS3 will be using blu-ray, while xbox 3 and gamecube 2 are probably going to use HD-DVD.
Might be a little bit of a wait..

Do you think these technologies will be like minidiscs and lazerdiscs, or will they actually make it in the consumer world?
Thanks for the links,
Josh

Since they are backed by such huge companies, they should have some lasting effect..
You can never be sure though.
