Working on a mod to a Apollo AI-1000 with a Kogi L4AX on top (preliminary to building my own projector from scratch). Cut everything last night (lcd was bigger than lighted area) and it is all in place. Except now I need to find some UV and IR glass to put in there. Are there any brick and mortars that sell this stuff? Or is the only way to order online? (if so what are some good, and cheap, sources?) TIA.
As mentioned already in the forum many times, check your local Window Tint shops for clear uv film, they will give you off cuts of the stuff free to suit and it blocks 99% UV. Alternatively Homedepot sells clear acrylic that is UV resistant also.

I wish. The ones around here and one I stopped by up in Seattle just have plain acrylic. Same with Lowes and Ace's
HAHA alternatively if you are anywhere near Midrid in Spain, look for the house with the permanent glow (it has been said it can be seen from space) Thats Ace's place, has a sign on the door Wide Beam Optics, you can get UV protection there too...no pies though 😛
What you need for UV blocking and minor heat shield (not as good as IR glass) is at Home Depot and it's cheap as hell. It's called "Lexan XL10". Make sure it's XL10 as that is the one with uv blocking, and 92% light transmissive. My 4" x 11" piece cost me less than $5. It's 1/8" thick.

Yup, bought some Lexan a few days ago, $4.75 at Home Depot. As for IR "Low E" glass is supposed to control the heat, although supposedly only either short or long wave IR (I've read tons of threads on this, forget which one it is.) So it should help the heat, at least a bit. I've found a hardware store around here that carries it special order. Still looking for other IR possibilities.
...you all suck. The hardware stores in washington and oregon that I've been to only have some no-name acrylic that likes to crack when trying to cut it (needed something more than just a score with knife and snap) No lexan or plexiglas branded stuff anywhere!
I should just move 😀

HAHA now you know a little bit how us Aussie feel SG...we see you Americans trotting off to the local store to get everything you need, here's us Aussies having to order from overseas for just about everything needed... no tempered glass under 40cm in OZ, no front surface mirrors, no acrylic with UV treatment on it, no cold mirrors, no lenses, no quality fresnels, no reflectors(im not talking about food serving instruments that can be used as reflectors here i mean proper reflectors) LoL... ahhh ya just have to laugh, would go mad if ya didnt hehehe
You're just not looking!
SGSeeker:
I see 9 Home Depot stores in the Seattle area, and about 10 more scattered around the rest of Washington. Try the store locator at www.homedepot.com. Even if you live in the back woods, you must go into town every now and then!
All the Home Depots I have been in, have both acrylic and lexan pieces. Get the 0.093" Lexan XL10. It is so tough, you can cut it with a metal-cutting blade in a jigsaw perfectly. An ordinary hacksaw works fine, too.
You can fool around with low-E glass, but I have read posts about it shattering from too much heat! The best heat control is either a $5 cold mirror from surplusshed.com or 4 pieces of hot mirror for $12 from diyBuilderGroup.com. It's easier to fit the hot mirror into your light path, since you can use it at 0 degrees.
