Hi,
When looking at the pinouts of a valve, which bloody way up is it?!
My bases have pin 1 labelled (looking from underneath) on the RIGHT side of the notch, but when looking from the top, that pin is Pin 8 according to all pinouts....

Turn the tube upside down so you are looking at the pins. Pin 1 is to the left of the space and it continues clockwise around to the last one. So pin 9 for example would be the right hand side of the space. So if you had your sockets mounted and the amp upside down the orientation is the same.
In other words, the data sheet pin out is as if you had the tube upside down and you are looking directly down on the pins.

Exactly what I'd figured, Fran.
If there is a NONCE OF THE YEAR award, please give it to me.
I measured the voltages, turned it over, and started again. Except I called the pin to the RIGHT of the notch Pin 1, and....you can see.
WHY am I getting 400V on 'pin 5' ? 😛

I hope you have that backwards or my amp is in danger. Pin 1 should be to the right of the gap (or key slot on octal) should it not?

it is, when you look at the BOTTOM. When you turn it over, it's on the LEFT.
Anyway. I fired her up and she lives!! Just a matter of shedding some ripple voltage now. 🙂🙂

i hope john broskie doesn't mind me linking this off his page, anyway...
the pins are shown here as if you had the tube held upside down in your hand, with the pins sticking back up at you. This is then the same orientation when you would look into the upturned amp with the rear of the socket facing you.
well, I'm always afraid of saying something totally stupid here... but my amps have worked so far! someone tell me I'm wrong before the 1/2 hr limit on edits is up!!

When in doubt, measure. Assuming the heater pins aren't symmetric, just put an ohm meter where you think they are, 4&5 in the image. If you get infinite R, you got the wrong pins.
Lol this has long since been solved by me being overtired and flustered with the flu and...general stupidity 😛
