No, never a 741.
They were discrete transistors.
They all sound different depending on the transistors used, the caps used and especially the batch of diodes used.
You can make two with identical schematics but different vintage parts and they will sound very different.
That's the hint on the mods. 😉
If you want another sort of sound, try the Ibenez "tube screamer" type schematic. I think that's what they are called...

Well I have no idea what you took apart or whatever - the original Big Muff Pi is/was descrete transistors.
At some point in time the ownership of the company "Electro-Harmonix" passed from the original owner(s) to others. At that point, who knows what was put inside the box! Subsequently, fast forward a few decades, one of the original owners reaquired the rights to the name - thus the present re-issues and the Russian imports.
Of this I am 100% certain.
I probably own one of the earliest Big Muff Pi boxes, alleged to have been "borrowed" from Jimi Hendrix. It is point to point soldered on perf board. I also have an early PCB only from Electro Harmonix, it is descrete transistors as well...
The schematic is probably up on the web in a few different places, fwiw.
No matter... but if you want the real thing, it'll have descrete transistors...
