Best Tube amp for jazz Music

Status
Not open for further replies.
I hope this hasn't been posted here before. if it has, my apologies. So I love my Jazz music. I like the sounds of the instruments and the sultry voice of the singers. I do like a little bass but not the hip-hop bass etc. I am looking for a good tube amp that I can pair up with my Audio Nirvana 12" ferrite driver.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I am looking at this amp by Musical Paradise: MP-501 V5 KT120 KT150 Tube Amplifier

Can someone also tell me what to expect from these tubes on an amp? Like are they good in the reproduction of highs, mids, lows etc.

6L6
EL34
6L6 + EL34
Shuguang KT88
Gold Lion KT66
Gold Lion KT77

Thanks in advance folks

The issue of the amp first : make sure you get schematics as a condition for purchase. No schematics no amp !

Regarding the tubes, in a good amp they all sound good, no amp will perform equally well with all of them, amps ( good amps) are designed for one of the above.

As amp suggestion : i would go with separate pre and power amp for better performance and more flexibility. A used Dynaco set ( st70+pas3x) might be obtained for less then usd1000 ( make sure it's unmunged amps, no funny mods!) Other amps and combinations is available on the market. ( fisher ?)
New amps is also available, have a look at tubes4hifi.com as a starter.

Pairing high efficiency speakers with a high powered amp might not be the best combination. Since this is a diy forum, are you willing (and capable) to build your own amps? (Warning: building tube gear is highly addictive 😉 ) There's a lot of helpfull and knowledgeable people here. 'Tubelab' George has his own active subforum in support of his designs. You may want to check it out.

lol... not interested in building my own amp. It looks complicated, I'm scared I'll blow something up as electric current is involved, and it seems like I will have to do a lot of reading. There's nothing wrong with a lot of reading, but between spending time with my 2 year old son, reading programming books for work... so that I can make more money to afford better sound equipment, writing my novel, and working out, I barely have enough time to breathe. Oh, I almost forgot, time for my wife... 🙂

If you aren't a DIYer then I might point you towards the Lowther Jazz 6L6. It's in the name, go Google [emoji16]
Plenty of others, budget and taste are paramount.

Thank you.

Thank you for the good advice. Why do I need the schematics?

I would not recommend the Dynaco equipment unless it is considerably rebuilt. Their original sound is just not good enough. Also, used equipment that old is very likely to have significant problems that a nontechnical person cannot handle. Are you sure that driver will sound good with a tube amplifier? Some speakers do not. Even Dynaco's own speakers sounded best with a solid state amplifier.

Here's what I would recommend: Find someone to build a Tubelab KT88SE amp for you and pair with 9 cubic foot Stonehenge cabinets loaded with the Great Plains Audio 604-8E II. I don't have the Tubelab amp but it's close enough to the same. My speakers are Stonehenge cabinets with Altec 604D, reconed as 604E by Great Plains Audio. You will be amazed and very happy. If you don't need the speakers, I'm sure the Audio Nirvana 12" would be great too. 604-8E II Coaxial 16 in. 2 way speaker AlNiCO Magnet – Great Plains Audio

I might add that depending on speakers , the power needed for real music aka jazz is between 15wpc and 40wpc. This significantly reduces the cost of amp. A dynacp SCA35 might be the entry device ?
Im getting Audio Nirvana super 12" plus feritte drivers and building the box. https://commonsenseaudio.com/an12cfspecs.jpg

Yes, they will sound good with tubes.

Very nice, I will listen to the amp on YT. Now I know I will not get the best sound on YT but it will give me an idea.

Looking at the speakers FR curve I would have to remove my recommendation for the Lowther Jazz amp. Too much of a good thing, too much top end and not enough bass.

Yeah, Id need an amp that can hit the bass.

I'm severely scratching my head if someone wants a suitable amplifier for this or for that kind of music :scratch2:. In my opinion an amp has to be as linear as possible and powerful enough, hence it is capable of truly reproducing any music.
Best regards!
