I am making portable speakers that run from an amp32 (41hz.com)
I am thinking of using some cheapish 10cm coaxial s (designed for cars).
really i want to do a mini ported enclosure, though winisd does not help as it always wants me to have box volumes of 1000's of litres and if i change it to 2L it says there will be no output bellow 800hz :/
second option is a 4.5" x 4.5" x 8" box (per driver, sealed), but I do not know weather it is better to mount the speaker on a long face or the short face. I will most likely use some type of stuffing to further maximise bass.
any help with the design of the small ported enclosures? or on the location of the speaker on the sealed enclosure

some other thoughts on this question. been looking at the ufonken design, are these ok for fairly loud outdoors use (15-20w /channel) as it is the only design i can see for this size. also are there suitable drivers that are Uk available? (and £20 ish for a set)
would a 10cm car speaker work in a ufonken enclosure (obviously not super hifi) as the drivers that most of you will suggest will be very expensive :/ not really suitable for the high damage/theft rate at skate parks etc.

The ufonken is certainly a great little giant killer in context i.e. not the one you describe above , and much of that can be attributed to the silly good raw performance of the Fostex FF85K . I'm sure folks that have experimented with this driver in other designs would concur.
No doubt "suitable (other) drivers" could be found for this enclosure, in the sense that they'd fit in the box and make reasonable sound, but I'd imagine the list of candidates that would deliver the same performance and meet your budget criteria would be very short indeed.
Keep in mind that the class of small /inexpensive car audio speakers you might be considering are generally designed for the confines of a vehicle, where they can certainly play more than loud enough to enjoy or even hurt; but used as you appear to be suggesting many would fall flat on their faces in terms of SPL/quality and durability for anything but very nearfield listening.
I would definitely agree that using the fostex drivers is the way forward, but their availability in the uk seems to be next to none, or there price is over double what the americans are paying, this would defeat the purpose of portable speakers (rugged and/or cheap to repair).
the car speakers are not hifi speakers, but the range they offer is good (just under 100hz to 20khz+) as they are coaxial. They are rugged as they are designed for car interior (bumpy/ high humidity), cheap, high sensitivity, so they definitely meet my criteria.
the biggest problem is that with car stuff only the sub speaker is easy to get t/s figures for, 10cm is almost impossible :/
as far as the ufonken design goes, it is cleverly designed and I don't have a hope of modifying it to match any driver other than the fostex, but I wont have any figures to design a box any way, so what I'm thinking is to biuld them to spec (apart from the slightly bigger hole) plonk the 10cm driver in and hope for the best, if it sounds bad then I can block the ports then it is just a sealed enclosure which was the other option I have anyway, and I am sure that the extra bracing and stuff of the fonken wont hurt a sealed enclosure.
any further thoughts on this option or suggestions to other hifi drivers to match the cab or a source of the fostex drivers in europe that is cheap enough (under £50 for a set delivered)
