Hi PSRR, low noise and overall sound, most probably, although I am really interested in what people consider to be their best alternative and why they think so.

I have looked at the AD825 and the Burson Audio Opamp, which also seems to be an excellent drop in replacements.

The PS requirement is +/- 15VDC. I am sure that there are many other alternates out there, so, I would love to hear your thoughts.

The '827 could also be a hf oscillation problem tho. The '134 would be better in that regard imo.

Interesting choices ... why would you choose the OPA827 and OPA134 over the OPA627 or AD825?

Hi all

Is the LM4562 a dropin replacement for the opa604a. Here's a quote from Bob Pearse

This precision amplifier, the LME49720, (also known as an LM4562) not only tests good, but it sounds good. The distortion is not only down somewhere below 0.15 ppm at 25 Hz, but it keeps improving at frequencies up to 1 kHz. It was designed as a precision audio amplifier, but is well suited for many other precision opamp functions, with the best, lowest distortion in the industry. The thermals found in most other bipolar transistor op-amps have been banished by excellent layout. Distortion as low as -159 dB has been observed as an inverter, even driving a 2 kilohm load.

Hey peeps🙂

I have swr amp with quite a few od the TL072's. I put a couple of the 2604's in as replacements...

But as a drop in replacement, what would you guys recommend:

Quiet operation is most important, then audio quality, but I think most newer stuff is nicer then the TL072???

And is ebay a safe place to get them or who do you guys order from?

In the mean time it was trivial to hear the difference between the two similar and recent National "ultra-super-low" distortion opamps for me. I think one of them is the one mentioned by Pease, and both have virtually identical specs (would love to see the actual, real schematic, eh? 🙄 )

I was not happy at all to hear any difference between them, and worse to not like one of them in a big way at all...

...and no I did not get to do a meaningful measurement on either... but one would think that you couldn't do squat to hear any difference between those two, right??

So, I'm not so fast to suggest opamps myself... seems like a whole lot depends on where they are and what they are trying to do as far as the sound that comes out...

Sorry, don't have the numbers in front of me.
I'd have to make an effort to look in the right places and round them up... both had the same 0.000000000000000000x% (exagerrating) THD specs from National...

The idea remains the same, regardless. As lumanauw said, which one is "right" and why the heck should they have any audible sonic difference in the first place??

Just pick the one(s) that sound best, imho.
Forget about what anyone says about them, unless they sound good, then what good is it?

A bit late perhaps to chime in, but here goes.

I replaced the TL072's in my 1996 SWR WM12 bass amp with TLE2072's. Results in a more open and transparent sound and a bit better bass IMO. Sonically it still has "that SWR sound" to it. Don't expect a miracle.

I did consider the OPA2604, but some people over @ talkbass.com suggested the TLE2072. The TLE2072 is cheaper too...
