I have pairs of both the scan rev 15w and SB satori 5", but have only tried the satori so far(car install), it sounded great
Anyone have opinions of these or other exotics, such as the accuton C90 or Audio Technology drivers?

I've used lots of 5"-7" drivers, and all were for different reasons. Application is everything!
There might already be a thread about this around here somewhere....

I use the Satori MW16P-8 , a smallish 6 inch midwoofer, in a trapezoidal open baffle design, it has a wonderful clarity about it that makes it a prized driver amongst rivals.

Thanks for the suggestion of a Satori MW16P-8. I like the fact that they have a very high freq response.
I have a pair of old Altec Lansing Model 9 series 2 and the mids are toast. They cross over at 800/7K which make them hard to find a replacement for. Matching the hole cutout of 138mm is not easy either. Anything else I looked at requires the xover to the tweeter to be lowered.
I have used Morel MDM55, they are pretty good and I am sure the EM1308 is even better.

Like most diy-ers I have tried many mid range speaker from 10 inch to 4 inch. The best sounding from the point of view of flat response and transient response has been the Seas MCA12RCY. The Audax HM100Z0 with phase plug. Both are very acceptable. Suggest keeping away from metal cones - they are a nightmare.

In car audio, the crossover is simple. I don't remember the model (I think 4") but for such application (as in an expensive comparison test) the Satori was best.
But if you know what to do with the filter, a nightmare driver will most probably turn out to be a winner (Physics rules).

I really enjoy the detail of the metal cones in the Dayton RS series.
For me the scan rev 15W is highly recommended. The slit cone design dampens cone edge breakup above 1 kHz. That paves the way for a simple LP xo design without fighting those nasty response peaks many conventional woofer/mids exhibit.
Some of the better midbass drivers Ive used over the years:
SS 18W/8545K
SS 15W Revelator (high qts version)
SEAS W18E-001
Dynaudio 15W75
Dynaudio 20W75
Vifa P17WJ (Don't laugh. Excellent midbass)
Of these, I'd have to say the SS 5" Rev has been my favorite overall, which I used along with the SEAS Millennium tweeter in a small, sealed 2-way that I built for my girlfriend.
The Dynaudio 20W75, while larger, provided fairly deep bass along with a wonderful midrange that you might not expect, given the size.
Dynaudio 15W75 2-way I never did get quite right in the bass tuning. Still sits out in their gorgeous cherry wood cabinets and occasionally I hook them back up and say, yep, still not quite right.
The SS 8545 of course, is still quite good as about anything out there in my opinion.
Vifa P17WJ - Gorgeous sounding and reasonably priced. That driver will always hold a special place in my heart as it was part of my very first speaker I built in 1990.
I haven't built anything now in quite a few years as I've been quite pleased with what I have - a 3-way tower with SS 8565, SS 8545K and SEAS Millenium. Since then, SB Acoustics and their Satori line have taken the world by storm and I'm feeling the need to try them out...
Still intrigued by Eton midbass drivers as well.

Aurum Cantus AC-130F1 smooth flat up to 7kHz, one minor breakup peak
FaitalPro 6FE200 great up to 5kHz, almost no breakups, highly efficient, great power handling
FaitalPro 5FE100 or 5FE120 flat up to 4kHz, very minor breakups

Not small, but the Eminence Lil' Buddy has become one of my favorite midrange drivers. I have it setup on open baffle.

One of the finds of a century was the Peerless 6,5" PPB woofer. Very good bass and midrange performance with a marvelously flat response. No issues with resonances of any kind. Better than Dynaudio 17W75 range of units and I'm a Dynaudio die hard user. That Peerless speaker was built for a third party. My current stereo setup is 24W75 (redone foams), D52AF and D28/2.
