Hey everyone,
I go to the Goodwill and Salvation Army fairly often and was curious if there is any conciseness on the best receiver brands. Normally what I see is late 80's-2000ish models by Pioneer, Sony, Yamaha,JVC, Denon ect.
I have never see a single high end or even Mid-Fi brand.
It's for a vacation house, I need something with a built in tuner because of space limitations. It will be pushing a set of rebuilt advent prodigy towers.
Thanks

Are they what you call Lo-Fi brands?
What you are wanting takes deep meditation and incredible timing to pull off. I have found decent equipment, but only when I truly really needed it.
I’m in one of the most rapidly growing parts of the country and you’re lucky to see those brands at thrift stores, and even then they are nothing special.
Probably better off to find some local online ad listings...

Craigslist, eBay, yard sales, the want advertiser (if you have it in your state), Facebook Marketplace, and ham fests. These are all more fruitful places to hunt than the typical Goodwill.

Goodwill sells the better stuff in their online auction.

I've actually bought stuff from goodwill online auctions, but had quite forgotten about it. It's another good option.

Ebay's much better, but once I saw on a shelf at Goodwill a pair of AR3a speakers in good condition.
Didn't get them, but it was a surprise.
I have a friend who is one of those Goodwill hackers. He knows the days & times & has people on the inside who provides him info on stuff they are about to put out. So what he does is he goes in, buys all of the "good" electronic devices, refurbs them then resells them. I always knew he was a bit loopy, but I have to admit, he is making quite a bit of money doing this. I have never seen anything good in any of the Chicagoland Goodwills, except for Wrangler jeans 😀
