Best CD Player for DIY

I posted yesterday regarding a Sony CDP 101 I picked up for next to nothing, it seems it is a bit of a classic and it sounds really good in my hi res system, but since it is a significant player that is working as it should when it seems most are no more than junk I have decided to give it a good clean, have it checked by an elcetronics mate and put it aside for posterity.

So I need a cheap but good quality CD Player for modding and to produce really good sound, I know cheap new ones are useless, I ve had several and none sounded as good as that Sony and most have 12month lifespans.

Anyone got any suggestions as to a suitable starter, I thought a Marantz CD73 ,might be worthwhile, but I'm sure there are many and this isn't my area. The main criteria apart from quality is that I want something that is fixable should it go awry, so spares are a must.

Many thanks in advance
Brad.

well I just bought a ..

GE No.3 cd player circa 1982. I think the mechanisms are similar, drive motor in the "sled" so a very deep drawer. Simple but effective clamping system. No or little error correction and (I think) perhaps 0 oversampling or perhaps 2X's at at most. Easy to modify boards, and built like a tank . I also have a Sony cdp990 which is much newer (circa 1990?), also built like a tank. The best interior I've seen (and Very Robust construction) is a Technics/Matsushida SLP8 from 1987 or so. Marantz "pro" cd players may also offer an interesting option.

The GE was probably sold as a Thomson brand world wide, but it was made in Japan. Many Toshiba chips, and the dac chip cross references a Toshiba XR40 cd player.

I think the priorities should be serviceable, or very robust construction. I also recall that in one of the very first "Positive Feedback" articles on the net that the NEC external cd rom drives apparently make a pretty good transport (and they generally have analog output if a 6X multispin or less).

I guess it all depends on what mods you want to try.
