Now I know this is like asking what' the best car in the world, or what is the best sport, but I would like to know if there are any nice "all round' subwoofer amplifier projects out there. More or less 50 watts? with a nice tone and crossover controll, but even that is not necessary if it sounds good without the controlls.
Mosfet, chipamp, whatever. Good quality is of the essence 😉

Hi,
Building a "quality" sub amplifier is a completely thankless task
given the effort and cost involved compared to just buying
one, given the very marginal improvements you will get if
you really know what you are doing in designing it.
There is no such thing a a "good" sub amplifier without
full details of the intended subwoofer and driver choice,
and the suitability of that choice to match the speakers.

Hi,
Probably, unless you can get good value drivers, knock
up decent cabinets and get a good value plate amplifier.
Its surprising how many good quality subs get moved
around used with some enthusiasts if your really serious
about sound quality, I don't know your options in SA.

I see
Well, my father is a very keen woodworker, and has experience in building speaker cabinets, and I'm studying electronic engineering, which makes the electronic part less unfamiliar... although tubes/valves are still a bit unfamiliar (and hard to come by in SA)
But I am open to buying and Building, I just want to know if the guys on this forum have any favorites in the sub amp category 😉

Hi,
As an EE you should realize a quite appalling full range amplifier
(as many sub amps are) can be perfectly adequate for sub
usage, and whilst hifi types do debate the sound of amplifiers
I've yet to see anyone being stupid enough to claim be
able to hear the difference between sub amplifier types.
"I just want to know if the guys on this forum have any favorites in the sub amp category"
Is a quite ludicrous question, however if you want a high quality
50W sub amp, you could do a lot worse than a chip amp as
the power section, the rest is preamplifier design.
