Best 200w amplifier for speaker testing

Speaker testing is best done using linear amplifiers as they generally tend to have better THD / IMD & PSRR when compared to most class-D amps. Typical class-D performance at lower power is also somewhat troublesome due to switching residual etc. However, they may still be used for high-power testing of sub-woofers.

Since no cheap single-chip linear amplifier would do 200W, I suggest you don't waste your time thinking along those lines, anymore.

For speaker testing, try to look at the performance at 1-5W power instead of irrelevant powers like 100W etc, as that's exactly where you would be operating. In order to be able to "confidently" neglect the non-ideal effects of the amplifier, (preferably) look for at least two zeroes before the decimal point in the % THD / IMD figures at these power levels. Another figure of merit for a voltage source is high damping factor or low output impedance.

As far as I can see you can only buy the modulus-86 pcb board, but you have to get the parts yourself. I am also not sure if it has enough power to drive the speaker, but I really like it

Please log in to the website for all the information. I believe only pcb is available for mod-86. The problem is Lm3886 is currently out of stock worldwide as far as i know but you can try to communicate/send email to Tom for help. All other parts are available at mouser or digikey.

I usually use surplus public address amps for this. Bonehead protection, peak limiting and enough power to not be a problem. Most of them also have multiple input connectors which is rather handy for doing a loopback without needing splitters. QSC RMX amps are pretty easy to get second hand.
