Hey all,
I have 2 Kenwood Eleven GX receivers, the first one has a broken timer which bothered me somehow and I just grabed a second one
of that auction site.
OK, here's what's going on: Thru the first receiver, I could pretty much listen to FM without an antenna, is that normal? It would pull
most of the FM stations with a signal strenght between 3.5 and 4 and a few stations to the maximum strenght. The FM sound is clear
and nice.
On the second reveiver, however, on the same conditions, most of the FM stations are in the 1 to 2 range strenght wise, but the sound
is still pretty decent, some stations show a little hissing sound. I am guessing that, with a proper FM antenna the strenght signal might
was well go up to 5, but I haven't tested with an antenna yet, I simply don't have one around.
So, my main concern is, tunerwise, which one should I keep? Does this little test mean that the first receiver is in better shape or, at
least, properly aligned? I could say I could live with the first one without ever putting an antenna on it, but, will putting an antenna make
it worse?
As I am kinda newbie to tuners, any input will be appreciated. Thanks.

The 1st one is most probably in better alignment, thus the increased sensitivity. It will only do better with an antenna. The 2nd one may have an alignment problem which can be fixed simply enough with the proper equipment and knowhow. It could have other problems, like drifting caps which are causing the alignment problems, or a bad automatic gain circuit (AGC). The AGC turns up the gain in the RF stages (front end) when tuning to weak signals, and down on strong ones to prevent overloading. I'm not familar with the Kenwood 11GX (you've got me wondering about the timer?), but the theory holds true for all FM tuners/recievers. Unit 2 may work ok with a decent antenna. You can get an idea with a twinlead dipole or even a length of wire in a pinch. A set of TV "rabbit ears" work even better.
Thank you Scott. The Kenwood Eleven series receivers were probably the only pieces of hi-fi equipment to come with a factory "mechanical" timer. You can read about it and see a picture of the Eleven GX here:

It has a fantastic tuner section. As I said, the first one pulls out stations with maximum strenght and the sound is crystal clear. The second one isn't bad, but without and antenna pulls out station on an average of 2 out of 5 in the signal strenght meter. I will most likely keep the more sensitive one.

Very nice piece!
I'd say it's worth a timer replacement/transplant. There are a lot of spring wound timers floating around, maybe you can find one close and make it fit. I'd start with a bathroom fan timer, and see if it's usable. Maybe you can find a basket case 11G with a good timer? Another thought is that those timers are pretty simple, it may be repairable?
If it was me, I'd be greedy, and fix them both if at all possible.
