Hi folks, got a question about barrel-shaped baffles and their sound. The ones I’m curious about are those offered by Caintuck and Decware; why are they cut flat, horizontally on their tops? Is that for looks or sound quality?
Is there a reason that a single full-range driver baffle should be cut flat on top?
Asking ‘cause I’m about to make some of similar size, for a set of Lii F-15. Wondering if a pointed / rounded top would sound much different..
Thanks. 🙂

The flat surface on top is the most common used and all the wife's of audio enthusiasts like the extra surface for decorating the manly hobby 😉
Beside the joking it's super simple to build and I assume the biggest factor why a simple cubic shape is used.
Exotic shapes are not for everyone's eye - in the end a speaker is a furniture decision that outlives the couch.
If you want to see the effect changes you need to use the software the edge and dive into the trial n error. You can find it at tolvan.com - freeware and really interesting.
If it's more about optics than physics, just do it - the difference to the flat top won't change the behaviour of speaker in a major way.
Don't overthink it too much before it stops your crafting - happened too often to myself.
I assume it's not the answer you searched for but the best I could give.
Have fun!

Thanks for your reply!
I was thinking that the flat, horizontal shape was for a proper soundstage - and concerned that my pointed design shape may hinder it.
Thinking along the same lines

Soundwise it should be similar to the barrel shape. You'll need bass support anyhow. And a notch. And tweeters.
If you ears are anything like mine: don't believe what they claim on the Big Betsy thread 😉

Hey! - Thanks for that link; I like those egg-shaped baffles, too! 🙂
Well, if you look at an actual barrel - side profile. I wouldnt place my speaker symmetrically as per drawing; offset is better. Run some sims using "the edge" putting the driver in various places on the baffle plane - you'll see why!
Actually a genuine full-size "oak barrel" would probably be a truly large enough interior volume for the fifteen. I don't know where just one might find such "spare" barrels.
I always though an overgrown "Alexis" cylindrical speaker would look cool, then sources of such structures immediately came to mind, twelve-inch PVC pipes came to mind, then larger cement cylindrical pipes. But these were limited to eight inch or so drivers, the twelve inch, let alone the fifteen inch variations, had me stumped...until you mentioned "Barrels". Wrapping the entire thing with some rubberized absorbing material except the tops & bottoms...then encase the whole thing with a fabric similar to the aforementioned "Alexis" thing....?

I’ll have to find something that runs Windows.. I’m all Apple here. 😕
12" sonotube cardboard cylinder ?
Flat open baffle - like the Caintuck and Decware speakers. I wanted mine looking a bit different but of similar size.
- Home
- Loudspeakers
- Full Range
- Barrel shape baffles ?
