AVC vs TVC for 10y line preamp

Hi.
I started building a 10Y line preamp with ll1660s as output transformers.
I first thought of my 100K (shunt) stepped attenuator at input but Thomas Meyer strongly suggests to use an AVC at output. The only "good" one I know comes from Intact Audio (D.Slagle).
However, it seems many TVC are around (Sowther, Silk, Glasshouse, stuff from eBay...).

Does someone have experiments, thoughts, inputs to share?

Thanks

Pierre

Hi

Either will work very well. I built a 10Y pre with an AVC a while ago.

TVCs have a theoretical advantage in that there is a measure of galvanic isolation
inherent in the principle also it is easy have a balanced i/p. With an AVC you need
separate i/p txs to provide this feature if you need it.

Personally I think this is a better approach but I would say that as I have designed AVCs for a commercial product which uses separate txs.

I would use whatever you can get at the best price. The AVC should be cheaper as its easier to make.

Hi Pierre,

Tribute audio also makes AVCs, but thera are indeed many more TVCs around.

Using a TVC instead of AVC after the LL1660 allows for balanced output, which may come in handy. If I had this preamp, and either AVC or TVC, I would try it at both the input and output, as each has advantages and disadvantages (as always).

Well, I didn't say a lot, he 🙂 but at least now I am subscribed, as I am curious what other members have to say.

Good luck with the project! Erik

didn't think of that, but Zeta4 has a good point: with a TVC at the input you can have both balanced and single ended inputs and outputs. Looks like a nice bonus, especially when considering the large amount of DACs with balanced output nowadays.
