I have been interested in an active crossover/dsp setup but reluctant to jump in. One of the biggest hurdles that seems to come up is volume control for 6-8 channels after the crossover. I've found threads of people integrating active xo's with an av receiver but not in the way I'm thinking. I want to run the outputs of the xo to the multichannel inputs of an av receiver and then the preouts from the receiver to my power amps. So only using the AV receiver for volume control. Looking at the manual for a Denon receiver with these ins/outs, it seems multichannel inputs bypass the eq and processing of the receiver. Leaving me with just the volume control that I'm looking for. I realize inserting an av receiver here is not the "audiophile" thing to do but it seems the easiest solution. At least until I can come up with a custom multichannel vc. Has anybody tried this?
Why would using a HDMI receiver not be a the "audiophile" thing?
Is it because it offers way too much "bang for a buck" in comparison with dedicated stuff labelled as hi-end or so?

I have a Yamaha that has all the multichannel ins and outs. EQ and any processing can be bypassed at the touch of a button. But does it do volume control on the line level outputs? Hmmmm..... I'm kinda of surprised that the Denon does.
But hey, if the line outputs are variable it should work just great as a giant volume control.

I realise that this is a fairly old thread, but just in case you haven't solved your problem yet...
This is exactly what I do. I take six multichannel shaped outputs from a miniDSP and feed them into the multichannel inputs of an Arcam AVR350. These inputs were intended to be used as analogue inputs from an SACD or DVD-A player, and are therefore not molested in any way en route to the AVR's binding posts except by the volume control and amplification stages. This works very well for me.
One thing to watch for is any limitations on the speaker sizes that the AVR imposes. For example, the Arcam AVR350 limits the rear surround speakers to "small", thus you wouldn't want to use those channels for your woofers.
I can't speak to other makes of AVR, but I would expect any AVR that has multichannel inputs intended for SACD/DVD-A playback to meet your needs. Good ones are becoming hard to find.
Bear in mind that AVRs are a broad compromise, especially as the number of channels increases; manufacturers have to build in a lot of features for any given price point. Look for a brand that puts audio quality above all the bells and whistles and you'll probably be OK.
The alternative is to build your own multichannel amplifier. I'm in the process of doing this at the moment using some of Tom Christiansen's Neurochrome products. Using an old AVR is a good way of proving the concept before you commit.
Whatever you decide, active crossovers and DSP can produce wonderful sound, and you don't need to be high-powered crossover designer to do it.
Using Yamaha as 6 channel poweramp
Hi
I am using a Yamaha RX-V 2400 as a 6ch pre and power-amp with dsp ( Najda) for many years now, absolutely without any problems, setting to 8 channel multi channel input, you need an amp with that option, most Yamaha homecinema amps from 2004 till 2013 have this option.
You can pick one up, here in Europe, for around 125 Euro,.Put in a new 22 nF cap in the power supply pcb and it will work for many more years!
Cheers, Tojoko.
