Thanx Kelticwizard,

Since the Harman group has taken over Audax I am a bit anxious what will happen to these excellent French speakers.

Also the German site is up and running:

http://www.audax-speaker.de/

😉

Yes, when a really big company takes over, there is always apprehension about what will happen. Look what a big corporation did with Phase Linear.

With any luck, Harman will decide to make Audax it's top-of-the-line "prestige" brand and leave the same people and philosophies in place that Audax has now.

hmmmmmm......

I couldn't possibly comment on Harman in a professional capacity, but from bitter experience I share your concern for the future of Audax. Harman doesn't seem to quite know what to do with it's European brands.

It'd be a shame if they suffered - they fill a budget niche very well in Europe. In fact, the bookshelf speakers I've just finished with cheapo Audax drive units turned out way beyond my expectations - I'm really impressed with them.

To get the US Site to work:

Originally posted by skriefal of avsforum.com:

I just looked up the IP address for www.audax.com. It's 209.58.221.7, and yes it is still active. However, they appear to be using virtual server software that relies on seeing "www.audax.com" in the URL you use to hit the site, so simply typing in that IP into your browser address bar won't work.

You can, of course, add an entry mapping www.audax.com to 209.58.221.7 into your C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file, and then you should be able to access the site as www.audax.com. You may or may not need to reboot after editing the file.

(Note: I don't know anything about Audax; just thought I'd be helpful here...)

Thank you for your concern with Audax. I am not a real computer person. I got as far as C:\Windows\system32\drivers and saw a screen full of gear drawings. :bawling: :bawling: Where do I go from there?

Your interest and help is greatly appreciated.

This is the easiest way to get to the file...Open the search function and search for files...usually start --> search/find files or folders. As the file name specify HOSTS. If that doesn't work for you just find the HOSTS files where you where previously. When it finds the file double click it and specify notepad to use to open the file. After that add the lines:

209.58.221.7 www.audax.com
209.58.221.7 audax.com

If you need more help you can contact me by any of the ways listed in my sig.

Bricolo:

www.audax.com has worked the way you describe since the site came back up in January.

The polymer chassis link works, though. The home theatre setup, complete with recommended box sizes and crossovers by famous designers, works as well. It is available by clicking on "Do-It-Yourself" on the main page.

To get the "Search" feature you desire, go to www.audax.fr, and click on "Produits" on the left hand side of the screen-not the main body of the page below. This will give you the listing and access to specs of all current Audax products.

Since you are French, this doesn't apply to you, but even non-French speaking DIYers will have little trouble reading the Thiele-Small specs in French.

Another option is to go to:
http://www.partsexpress.com/webpage.cfm?&DID=7&WebPage_ID=162

This is the Audax page at Parts Express, and it lists just about all their tweeters and 29 current Audax woofers with a quick link to the Thiele-Small specs. I don't know if that is Audax's total current line, but it sure has to be most of it.

I wonder if Audax hasn't worked a deal with Parts Express to disable the "Search" function at the Audax American website as a way of sending American DIY'ers to the Parts Express page.

the bad thing, is that the .com site has more drivers listed
the .fr only has the 2003 products line

Bricolo:

At the www.audax.fr site, there is a line in the main body of the page which says, "Listes 2001 & 2002". That could help.

Also, if you go to www.madisound.com, then click on "catalog" you can go to the Audax section and download a 2.7 MB pdf file which lists the specs for some past models.

Solen of Canada has an extensive Audax line-they keep the Pro stuff farther down the page than the HI-Fi line.
http://www.solen.ca/aud.htm

Finally, if their is a specific Audax driver whose specs you are looking for, you can write Audax plus the model number in Google or some other search engine and might be able to find a web page that lists the woofer. Many times, people put thier loudspeaker projects on the web, (very helpful to other DIY'ers), and list the specs of the drivers they used in it.

Is there a specific driver whose specs you want?

I have not built a Transmission Line, so I cannot give much advice there. Here are a few suggestions.

We have two members here with webpages devoted to Transmission Lines. One is Planet 10, the moderator on this forum, and the other is Martin J. King, who posts under the name MJK.

Much attention has been paid to The Peerless Pipe by R. Brines. I am not sure if he is a member here. Brian GT, another member, heard the Peerless Pipes at a DIY show. The Peerless Pipe page is a wealth of information about how to go about building a Transmission Line, and is highly recommended. If you like the look of the project, you can consider substituting Audax drivers-with all those woofers and tweeters, I would think a suitable substitution is available. Look for similar Thiele-Small specs.
http://www.geocities.com/rbrines1/Pages/Non-Resonant_Pipes.html

I would check out www.audax.com and go to the Do-It-Yourself section and check out the home theater kits by Joe D'Appolito, the KLS 9 by Vance Dickason and the Signature series. While none of these are Transmission Lines, they give schematics for crossovers for a wide variety of Audax woofer/tweeter combos and I would copy those crossovers if the woofers are suitable for Transmission Lines. Up at the crossover point, it does not matter if the woofer is being used in a Closed Box, Bass Reflex, or Transmission Line-any impedance differences are confined to the bass region. At the crossover point, the impedances will be identical whichever box is uses. Don't forget to keep the spacing between the woofer and tweeter the same if you use the crossover in your design. Woofer-tweeter spacing is important in crossovers.

A couple of more suggestions. The website at www.audax.fr has a discussion area and since you are French, I would think that discussion board would be a good place to check out for advice on Audax drivers.

The other suggestion is to do a search on Google or elsewhere for Audax Transmission Lines or similar words and see what comes up. As stated before, many DIY'ers put their projects on the web and it is a great help, not to mention a lot of fun, to check out the various design approaches and ideas that they come up with.

Good luck, and let us know what you decide. 🙂

PS: Planet 10's Profile Page, with links to his Transmission Line page and his email, is at

Martin J, King's Profile Page, with links to his Transmission Line webpage and email, is here:

Both these guys have helped many members with their Transmission Line projects in the past.

Bricolo:

Cannot help you with the differences on the listed parameters. Just for the heck of it, which drivers are listed differently?

If Driver A has an Fs half an octave higher than driver B, but has a Vas that is only half as much as Driver B, then both drivers will have the same cutoff when placed in the same box. The Qts will have to be a little different, though.

That is for ported and closed box speakers. Transmission Lines, I am not sure, although I do know that Thiele-Small parameters have an effect on them as well.

As a result, drivers with varying specs can give similar performance. Perhaps these were measured at different times?

I added the links to Planet 10's and Martin J. King's websites and Email after I first posted. You might want to check them out.

Whew!, you respond quickly! 🙂
