Hi.
im a about to build my own home cinema, and my problem is that the speakers i want to build will probably be to large to put under or above the screen (going to use projector and screen). so i will have to put it behind.
i need the screen to be kind of cheap, as im on a tight budget. i was thinking some 2-300$

what material can i use to build this myself?

I have worked at a dome I-Max theater, and they use a perforated metal with a special paint coating to make the screen. That allows the speakers to be placed behind. The only problem is, if there is any light behind the screen, the picture will become transparent. This might be remedied by putting black speaker cloth on the back side of the screen though.

I hope this helps.

In one of the German speaker building mags there was an article on building a home-theatre screen. They first used some special material from the UK which gave unsatisfactory results in terms of HF reproduction. They later experimented with some pretty ordinary kind of fabric which seemed to be much better. I'll try to undig the article.

Regards

Charles
