have a bunch of these lighting fixtures but i dont know if they are usable, little dusty but seem to be intact inside the cases. hopefully someone with more knowledge about these can tell me.

That's a S51 coil and core ballast. It's suitable for use with the Ushio S400DD bulb. Only problem would be thr required voltage to run it. You can find those ballasts on ebay in 120 volt versions for 35 dollars.

They are 277 volt. Not sure if they are single or three plase. Hard to tell from the pics. As for cheap lighting, how cheap do you want to go? Some people are happy with buying a cheap used overhead projector that has a 360 or 410 watt bulb and stripping the light engine out and using that.
