For speaker cabs on a budget. This is the stuff used in construction over the studs on outside walls. Lots of construction in my neighborhood so lots of scraps available. Will use lots of interior bracing. Green part will be on outside for a Duratex finish. Just wondering. Thanks.
Hmm, got a link? Googling 'Green Exterior Siding Board' returns everything but and doesn't 'sound' like what's being used on the newly constructed homes in my locale in that its 'green' spec-wise, but finished on both sides.
well it may be a much better damped cab than wood BUT will likely need some bracing and the stuff is fragile
Thanks for responding. I'm in an older neighborhood in Texas and they are knocking down houses and replacing them with McMansions. It's approx 1/2" thick, made of wood chips, green paper or something on one side, and raw wood on the reverse. They tape the seams and bricks go outside that. The green coating is probably some sort of vapor barrier. I'd probably use 3/4" ply for the speaker baffle and brace the cab well. I'd probably do green side out and use a Duratex acrylic finish and give extra care to the raw edges so it doesn't look too trashy. Don't like messing with MDF. Thanks for any suggestions.
I think your talking about ‘zip system’ by Huber engineered woods (same people that make ‘advantech’ ) both are just OSB sheathing difference in the zip is it’s coated with a moisture barrier paint and is taped at the seems to eliminate the need for house wrap.
OSB might be ok for speakers, I’ve heard of other people doing it and it actually sands up and takes a nice finish, advantech can also be had in 3/4” and 1” for floors.....I’d use the thicker.

It's interesting to consider alternate construction materials that are available at the national "depot" style supply houses. I guess it all started with foamcore -
Years ago a buddy was building a speaker. I designed the crossover for him. He asked what material he should make the cabinet, and I told him MDF..."what?"... "Medium Density Fiber Board"... so he trucked himself down to the hardware store and he did not see anything called MDF or fiber board... but he did see particle board and OSB... the OSB was cheaper and so that is what he bought. My buddy was sort of a "shoot first and ask questions later" kind of guy.
I did not find out about this until his cabinets were nearly finished. I thought it was a big mistake, but actually the OSB was fine.
