Hi Guys
I am looking for a pro 10" used as midrange above two 15" woofers in a power HiFi setup (xover frequency around 200 Hz).
Has anyone first hand experience with one - or even better both - of the drivers mentioned above ?
If he has used both: Is the 10nmba520 really audibly better than the 10nmb420 from a sond quality point-of-view (i.e. midrange clarity) ?
Regards
Charles

Augerpro tested the 8nmb420 and found it inferior in measurements to B&C's 8ndl51. The 12" version with the AIC motor didn't seem to fare as well as the Acoustic Elegance and Eminence neo drivers.

That said, I really like the 12MB700 I have. Very loud, clean, and robust.
How high do you need it to go?

PHL Audio: Products ?*10 inch in
I think these will probably be among the best prosound mids you'll find.
A setup using a PHL 10" mid.

Hi Ernie
Thanks for stepping in. I already had a look at PHL. They are quite hard to purchase. But they would definitley be an option.
The midrange would have to work up to 1.2 kHz approx, where a horn with a D2 driver will take over.
Another option, if I would stay with Eithteensound, would be the 12nmb420, which differs from the two 10nmb420 and 8nmb420 by having a copper sleeve over the pole. A German PA guy measured and used them and said that it was one of the cleanest sounding drivers he used so far but that it was a little boring and not agressive enough for his uses.
And there would still be the option of going with a Beyma 12p80nd or 12p80fe. But for a xover frequency of 200 Hz they would be quite overkill in a home environment IMO. And I doubt that they are lower in THD than the 10" Eighteensound ones.

Can't see going wrong with the 12nmb420. Forgot about that one. Not many drivers have that much copper in the motor outside of AE or JBL. One man's "boring" is another's "refined". It has good off axis response compared to other 12" drivers as well.
What horn are you using?

I will try this one here (i.e. I already have them):
JBL Horn Lens #5006815 for STX825 - Speaker Exchange
Maybe not as sexy as an M2 horn (or some radials) but it will fit my intended design better (WTMW).
I haven't measured the combo yet but I did a quick listening and it sounds as if its unequalised response is flatter than an old 2344/2426 combo that I also have.

Not as sexy but probably more effective in home use with a tighter coverage pattern. This will be a low compromise system...be sure to share listening impressions when it's all done 🙂
This German supplier of speakerkits has some measurements on his homepage. And he does also supply THD measurements.
This one is from a PA top using a single 10nmb420 measured at an SPL level where most HiFi drivers will show nicely evaporated voice-coils:
JM-sat10 (MT-101) - PA Kompaktes Multifunktions-Topteil | Jobst-Audio - Tontechnik
This one is for a top with two 10nmb420s at an even higher level:
JM-sat210 (MT-210) - PA Clusterbares Topteil | Jobst-Audio - Tontechnik
And this one is using a single 12nd710 also at an insanely high SPL.
oank7mtc.jpg aus dem Album Public Address von Jobsti - directupload.net
All these drivers behave quite well at these levels and I expect them to be much better at loud domestic levels. It is quite nice that k2 is higher than k3 for both drivers.
A WMTMW with two 10nmb420 would also be cool but it would be quite a monster OTOH !
Difficult to say how much better the AIC equipped drivers would behave.

Thanks Scott for that suggestion.
Faital is not that difficult to source here. There are some good Swiss and German suppliers. But the last time I needed Faital drivers I ordered them through Parts Express. Was even a little cheaper than European suppliers and the handling of the order was very professional.
Talking about the 10pr410: I have eyballed that one as well a few weeks ago. I e-mailed Faital in order to get information on distortion and maybe CSD as well. But there was no answer so far unfortunately. Just reading "low distortion" in a data sheet doesn't do it for me.
