I just found a box of transistors in my drawer (TO3 casing) that are labeled Motorola, BUT 14, T8523.
Are they at all useful? Cheap? Whatever?

I found your deveices at the following link :

It a NPN-darlington transistor mainly used for switching apllication. I do not think they will make a good amp, but you could use them to built a series voltage regulator.
