Anyone have spare tonearm wire for sale?

Hi,
when I first entered hifi (in it's correct sense) over 30 years ago I was told only cheap phono preamps were located next to or inside the record deck. To do it properly you have to integrate the pre with the amp. How times have changed.
Can you relocate your phono pre to under or next to your arm bearing and thereby shorten your cables to about 600mm or less from the headshell?
The long leads at much higher voltage and more resistant to interference can then run to a line input preamp or integrated amp.

I do not agree with the other posts over here.

I've got very, very good experience with solid core.

Very thin emailed solid core copper costs about a dollar/euro per mile and is extremely good. Don't forget most coils of the cartridges are made of the same material.
The lacquered isolation is better than all other isolation materials.

Solid core silver is even better but hard to get and more expensive.

I never had any problems with breaking, altough I don't know what you intend to do with it.
I normally only plug the cables into the cart and pre-amp and play records. 😎

Don't forget all wire and kable eventually is made up of solid cores.

Eric, thanks for that. I'm going to have a go with the wire I have.

Someone did mention to me that worn tonearm wires caused the death of two amplifiers he had so I was very wary.

To my thinking, if the wires do not have any tight turns then there should be enough flexibility to last given that the angle of movement of the tonearm is quite small.

Anybody else with very fine, solid core experience?

Ruvane.

Hi again,
A local hifi retailer once gave (yes free) me a short length of coax to rewire my SME 3009, sorry none left. It was very flexible and 1.2 mm od(about 50thou). The two lengths then draped out of the bearing straight into phonos into local preamp inside the plinth. I have no idea about a manufacturer but I guess someone must know a current source.
Or how about trying to braid 36g enamelled wire? Could you manage 40g?

Tonearm wire

Hi Itzhak,

I haven't yet had any time to continue my turntable project so I haven't tried the wire yet.

I did, however, find even thinner wire in the motor of a quartz clock module that someone had dropped on the floor!

If the wires are shielded then I think they should be fine. I will post something as soon as I can get a chance to progress the project.

Laserit.
