Nice woof!
Looks like they are going for a cleaner long throw. For the price, worth the effort. Hmm.
You thinking vented?

lox xmax: 8.3mm (good for vented) but the qts seems like it might be too high, or atleast I like a lower qts.
I think $100 is a good price for that kind of frequency responce.
I wouldn't mind spending about $150 on a driver, but there aren't many other subs in the price range that can notes that low.
edit: forgot about Peerless XLS
Are there any subs that you can think of?
Thanks,
Josh

One thing I don't like, is that they don't have a 12" that goes lower.
I've been debating which sub to buy for my room. I was looking at the Ascendant Audio Atlas 12, with low QTS, XBL^2 technooology, and is made so that pretty much you can't over power it. Along with the Peerless XLS. The Atlas would be great for vented, but it can't hit low enough for home theater. The XLS, well everyone knows the XLS, but I want to try something new. Does anyone have any other good ideas to consider?
Thanks,
Josh

The Atlas 12 can go low, did you try to model it before saying that?
The simulation is very close to a Adire Audio Shiva Mark IV when you have a box of the same size.

No I haven't modeled it, but the fs is 23.2hz and the qts is low at .33, but has I find the high xmax a little odd, but I really like the fact that it cannot be over powered. I also like the fact that it has XBL^2 tech. With the fs higher than the D10.8 I thought that it probably couldn't go as low.
I'll model it this weekend, along with the XLS and the D10.8. Can you think of any other subs that would be for a HT application?
Thanks,
Josh

That driver looks like more of a woofer than a subwoofer. I recently heard a pair of 12" focal subs which were probably similar. Very musical sounding, but I had to be careful not to overdrive them. That was for music. Not what you want for home theatre.
With the Atlas 12 sub, don't be fooled - it could easily be overpowered. The Atlas is designed to not need a lot of power so a typical 250w or 350w plate amp will do the job. The easier a sub can be overpowered, the better, as this is less money you need to spend on the amp.
Most subs come into 2 categories:
* 1 - small box, high power
* 2 - large box, medium power
Drivers like Shiva, Tempest, Atlas 12/15 and many others work with a mid powered typical plate amp and prefer fairly large boxes.
Drivers like AE speakers AV series are designed for smaller boxes and need a lot more power.
In order to work in a smaller box, they need to handle more power. This is not a reason to buy them, but rather a necessary evil if you want your box small, since it costs you more for the amp. Forget about power. Consider xmax and how much power you need to use it.
Comments about how low a driver can go are meaningless without sims. In theory any sub can go as low as you want with eq if it has enough excursion to do it with sufficient output. Some very high excursion subs like AV series and Blueprint have a fairly high fs, however this is not necessarily the low frequency limit. Try tuning below fs and see what you get ...

Paul,
The reason I was saying the Atlas can't be overpowered is because there is like matting under the voice coil so that you can't ruin the sub by overpowering.
I tried modeling the D10.8, but I think I did something wrong when entering the parameters. I'll probably end up with the XLS by the end. The AV12 and the XLS have both gotten really good reviews, so good , that I can't immaging them not sounding good. I like the way Vikash build his XLS (as I mentioned to you earlier Paul) but I want to try something different. I'm going to bring in my car sub (e13kv.2) soon into my room powered by my gainclone, just to see how the bass sounds. I might decide that that is too much bass.
Thanks,
Josh

Josh, there is no such thing as a sub that can't be overpowered! The power rating of the Atlas is 300w IIRC. It would probably be happy with a 350w or 500w amp as long as you use it sensibly but if you used an amp like mine which can produce 2.4kw into 4 ohms ...
Just to add to what Paul said, power rating is simply the amount of power you can put through the thin voice coil wire before damaging it, and has nothing to do with excursion related damage (which is what I assume the matting is for).
And remember, you can also underpower 😉 IME its best to use something with a lot of power on tap but used sensibly.

It's better to have more than you need than less. Not enough power and the amp clipping puts more strain on drivers. I've used high power PA amps to drive my mains without problems. I've found I could get more clean SPL out of them that way. 2 things you have to watch, firstly too much continuous power and the VCs will cook and secondly, too much power and the drivers will bottom. If you use your ears, however, you will hear signs of stress and turn it down before damage results.
