I've got a couple of laser and motor mechs salvaged from old CDPs (one Marantz and one NAD) and am wondering if there's something useful I can do with them. Both CDPs went to the bin due to incessant skipping so perhaps the laser/motors are just trash?
The lasers/motors would not skip of themselves, but because of the servo circuits that drive them.
I think as stand-alone they are pretty useless.

Really? Bearings and gears wear, lasers fade, optics gets cloudy too. Yes sometimes a control loop goes out of adjustment, but I know fading lasers are a common issue (laser diodes run at the limits of the materials involved, its not easy to get a population inversion). Any aspect of the drive mechanism going out of spec can ruin your day and cause skipping, you can't blame the control loop for all that! The lasers/motors would not skip of themselves, but because of the servo circuits that drive them.
Some guys make small CNC routers out of old drives, there are how to videos on youtube...
This is brilliant and perfect. Thanks so much!
