I am needing to replace a morel mdt29 tweeter. I think these were supposed to have ferro fluid. One has shorted out and the other still works. Can anyone recommend a direct replacement?
That would be the cheapest and probably best solution, if you don't want to change the crossover.
The impedance curve of the Morel MDT 29 suggests (very high, pointy peak) it doesn't use ferrofluid at all. If it does, you should renew the fluid aswell though.

Note:
The MDT-29 fails when crossed over low due to lead-out wire fracture.
The MDT-30 has a braided lead-out wire and has virtually no failures this way.
The R-30 diaphragm is only about $4 more.
I suggest changing the pair, and save the working one as a spare.

The change of the MDT-29 diaphragm to the MDT-30 one leads to a higher spl, a changed frequency response, the need for ferrofluid, a lower resonance frequency, a changed phase, the need to apply different damping and it got a much different inductance, which results in the need of a completely new constructed crossover. And that's the reason why I would not recommend the swap - unless you are a very experienced speaker developer and are willing to invest the time and money for the change. The MDT-29 fails when crossed over low due to lead-out wire fracture.

Besides that, a broken lead-out wire can be fixed.
By the time I get some ferro fluid, replacement domes, shipping and exchange, I will be close to $100 Canadian ($70US). Is there an equal replacement in the same price range?
Well, you'll need crossover parts too. More similar tweeters might need less modification than a MDT-30 mod though.By the time I get some ferro fluid, replacement domes, shipping and exchange, I will be close to $100 Canadian ($70US).
Well, other tweeters will need a crossover change and -development too. To suggest something you have to give more information though, which woofer, enclosure, crossover frequency etc.Is there an equal replacement in the same price range?
Good and cheap soft dome tweeters are some Dayton, Tangband or Peerless if you want to order from parts express. There are a lot more good tweeters out there but I don't know the prices and distirbutors (except a few) in the US. I could suggest a lot of european/german ones but I guess that's not what you have in mind regarding shipping and delivery time.
Why not go for the original diaphragm?
wondering if a cheaper Dayton morel type tweet would drop in, with a bit of padding down i.e. DC28
Rather than go through all the hassle of repair, why not just get a replacement MDT29 from Madisound @ $54 USD ($73 CAD) or Parts Express @ $51.90 USD ($70 CAD). Perhaps more money than the repair but it's a drop-in replacement with no other hassles, including your no doubt valuable time.

The magnet structures, top plate and rear chamber are different (that's why they measure different).
The diaphragms are the same (other than the lead-out wire).
Vifa also offerd the same drivers with your choice of lead-out wire. For about $1 more I always bought the braided lead-out wire.
I have repaired lead-out wires before, it takes a certain degree of skill.

The diaphragm is almost identical but the voice coil isn't. That's why the MDT 30S got 0.05 mH inductance and the MDT 29 0.09 mH. Look it up on the data sheets! You are confusing the MDT 29 and the MDT 33, the 33 is identical to the 30.The magnet structures, top plate and rear chamber are different (that's why they measure different).

The braided lead out wire is of a much better quality. But 'looks similar' and 'fits' doesn't make it universally exchangable. Unless you are x-over it at a high frequency, you have to adapt the crossover.

I have repaired them quite a lot of times, mostly in the 80-90s but I don't find it that complicated. If you are proficient with soldering, it's not very much of a task.
Here's a pair for sale
