Any DIYAudio Forum Users, Using LINUX?

Hello Everyone,
Haven't been on the forum for a while, spending alot of time playing with Puppy Linux.
Anyone else giving it a go! or are you too busy soldering a few Transistors, Capacitors etc together to worry about it.
Writing to you now with Linux. I know if I ask this question in 5 years time, I'll get more answers.

There's a very good chance this forum is being hosted on a Linux Server so you might be using Linux already without knowing about it.

My PC boots in 23 seconds and shutdown in 7 seconds, lets see Windows do that.
Also at the moment I running a Live CD with the complete Linux Operating System on it. No need to install, no Virus's, Anti-Spyware or other Windows Problems.

AHH!!! live is easy.

Yep! Have used it as my sole OS for years now. Probably 5. Though I did use it extensively in a dual-boot before that, and have managed a few web servers running Linux too.

Am now using Kubuntu - it's the best desktop Linux distribution IMO. Got annoyed with WinXP insisting I have IE, OE, WMP and MSN Messenger installed, even though I chose to use alternatives.

Love it. 🙂

Hi EC8010,
I just installed Fedora Core 6 a few days ago. It comes with Open Office. Updates come down similarly to Windows. Firefox works very well. What you need to do is look in the optional program list. Many toys.

I'm mostly running XP, XP Pro with some NT4, 98SE and OS/2 R4. I do not plan to update any further along the Microsloppy line. I think Linux support is better for problems as well.

Right now I have loaded a couple 1.4 GHz AMD boxes with Linux and will get use to them before I consider cutting over. The server will certainly be the first to go over to Linux. No regrets when that happens.

Edit: One huge point in favour of Linux or OS/2. Journeled file system (or JFS). John, use this file system if you haven't already. Reading NTFS partitions works transparently.

Hello anatech, I have a second computer. Perhaps I should try Linux on that when I have the time. I will still need Word Perfect. (I have tried Open Office when I've needed to open M$ Word documents, and didn't like it.)

Hi EC8010,
That's fair enough. I found Open Office to be very much like uSoft's office suite. Perhaps Open Office has developed enough to be useful to you now. I must admit that I haven't had the occasion to use it yet.

Therein lies the rub. I like Word Perfect because it has a "reveal codes" feature so that if the formatting all goes horribly wrong, you can look through it carefully, then delete a code, and if that doesn't sort it, undo the delete and try again.

Hi EC8010,
I'm afraid we've all been trained to be stupid.

I can't honestly say what Open Office is like. My youngest daughter (15 years old) approves of the entire package though. She wants it on her computer. Right now she is running Win 98SE.

View > Non Printing Characters

or just "ctrl+F10"

I use 1.1.3 and there's quite a list of normally hidden things you can view.

How old was that copy of OO you tried? That's been in it since 0.9.something and they are at 2.something now with a dozen in-betweens.

Cheers!

Hi Geek,
I think we're at 2.0.4 . Yup, I just checked.

Question. Anyone know why I have to do a reset off a cold boot to start the OS? No error messages, it just sits there and drools after getting through the information screen for the bios.

2.0.4? Cool!

Your GRUB or LILO not working? 😕

Hi EC,

Not so much determined as if we could get you a free copy of WP for UNIX, we would 😉

I haven't touched unix, linux, whatever...since doing assembler programming for lan systems...back in the early days. You guys are scaring me. Linear stuff like math and..well..programming (debugging) gives me the fits.

If linux has progressed to the point where my non-linear self won't get an ulcer or die of chair/bed sores from not moving while trying to figure this stuff out.... then I might take a shot at it.
