Maybe not news to you guys, since this M&K design has been around for a while, but I've never seen anything like it:
M&K Sound X12 Subwoofer - HomeTheaterHifi.com
M&K Sound X12 THX Subwoofer | Sound & Vision
I like the idea of minimizing second order distortion, in a small box. The commercial 2X12's I've seen / used (JTR, Yorkville, Line 6) are all standard BR designs. I haven't heard the JTR, but the Line 6 and Yorkie both sound very muddy when cranked. That could be port noise, but I think it's mostly even harmonics. I'm not a fan.
I wonder if this "push pull" design would work with a slightly larger design, (for better efficiency) tuned a little bit higher, for live music / DJ application. Has anyone built something like this?
