I have revealed my greatest secret by posting a typo in my first topic title. I wasn't going to tell you this, but actually I'm a mortal too 😉
Welcome to the forum
Do you mean the program or the store?
iTunes is a great piece of software... as for the store, i'm all for boycotting all the places that sell compressed audio... CDs are already limiting enuff. The whole MP3 thing is creating a generation that has no idea what real hifi can sound like.

boycott iTunes

Well, a mere snap of my fingers and my, (that I kept secret as well), God-like powers have corrected your typo...

Both 🙂. iTunes as a music player is easy to use if you agree to sacrifice quality and the feel of control the advanced user always has with things like a personally tuned Winamp 5 or Foobar2000.
Read the article behind the link in my sig and you'll see what I mean. Actually iBoycott(tm) 🙄 all sources that sell lossy packed audio for consumers are very disrespectful towards the consuers.. The record companies don't give away rights to music stores without paranoid restrictions and bad quality and allofmp3 is really the only possible solution
Yes, I buy AC3 & DTS DVD:s but I higly dislike music DVD:s that doesn't feature a LPCM stereo track that can be ripped for use in my mp3player without any transcoding. I also dislike the new music formats (DVD Audio & SACD) becouse so far it's been completely impossible to use the music on those discs. Nowadays some publishers have realised the compability problem and put ac3/dts tracks on their discs too (how many "normal" people you know want to pay for a "playsallformats" extra expensive Pioneer DVD player?). It's of cource the patent/licensing thing: support for SACD and DVD audio is very expenise to include in hardware. NAd the new DRM systmems are hard to crack, it hasn not been done yet.
That's just the beginning. I feel that all forms of DRM are stupid. Music from iTunes Music Store or MSN can be played only on specific players and the technologies behind the encryption systems are heavily patented which of cource makes it dangerous to play around in public trying to crack it. You know the case of DVD-jon (who is now wotking on iTunes DRM cracking solutions), don't you?
Selling bad quality audio to consumers really shows the companies real attitude. There is a whole generation of young people today who are too used to the handiness of 128 kbps MP3/WMA/AAC. People are about to forget what quality is like.
I want to use all the music I buy in my mp3 player which currently is a Sony CD Walkman (D-NE700), but I'll buy one of those iRiver HD players the day I have the money. I don't want to transcode from anything, so my favourite music DVD:s always feature an unpacked LPCM track.
I store my music on my hard drive in mp3 (LAME --alt-preset standard). My equipment is decent although not very high end, but my ears are good enough to ABX --alt-preset standard from the original source with headphones, silent environment and high volume levels, but the file size/quality/compability equation of LAME VBR-presets is unbeatable. mp3 is not all that bad with LAME.
I don't know the rules of this forum and it's official statements on copy protection cracking, but haven't written about iTunes in a long time without linking to
*link removed*
128 kbps AAC or WMA on 5 computers is not worth the current prices, actually it's aoutrageuosly unfair.
Hi mate.
Whilst I appreciate and agree with many of your sentiments I have removed the link. Because we are a high traffic site we might be vulnerable to any legal action, and as we are mostly into building stuff here, losing the great resource we have built up would be a real shame because of something that is not our core function.
Thanks for your understanding

Yeah, I guess you did what you had to do. It's hard to be located in the U.S. (?!) isn't it? 😛. These programs aren't illegal in E.U. yet. But the evil corporations are doing lots of very evil lobbying so the software patent legislation might be passed in E.U. any time soon. These are dark times we live in, but I will if you want to crack iTunes you can Google for it. Or you can check out the soon to be started blog on my linked site, I'll be posting lots of material with a deep disrespect for the interests of big biznizz in general.
Approx. 1/2 of the apps I use on a daily basis would be violating these kinds of laws so I guess the Open Source community is quuiite screwed!
What a great thread. Within 24 hours I've presented myself and rebelled against the system. 😎 Cool and very original I must say.
