At a recent close-down sale (Wilko's for the UK-based members) I picked up four Acacia wood salad bowls for a very low price with the intention of using them for a pair of speakers, using a pair of Jordan drive units I've had for a while.. The bowls aren't really hemispherical and two joined together make more of a barrel shape. The speakers will be reflex ported and calculations suggest they should get down to close to 60Hz, which is fine for the office type use-case I have in mind. Anyway, I've now started work on them.

The barrel shape should be slightly better than a sphere for de fraction if I am understanding the many debates I have read here on the forum. Again I cant show the math, but the further you get away from the spherical internal shape the standing waves and reflections get less troublesome.
Plus they look cool.

awesome Ray. I'm also looking forward to results.
I've still got mine and fwiw I don't think standing waves will be a problem, they certainly aren't in mine.
In some respects I'm a bit envious . My Tangbands are absolutely fine but I would have liked to try Jordans.

These are Ikea bowls, about 280mm diameter, 9.2 ltrs.
Mine are about 12 years old but I beleive ikea still make them.

Both internally and externally.

The IKEA bowls are called BLANDA. They're made from bamboo and are still available. There are a few threads around here that show them in action.
I like the acacia of OP's bowls, though. Sand it down and give it a nice finish when done and I bet it could really shine.

Thanks for the positive comments.
From the baffle perspective, a nice feature of the acacia bowls, compared to the IKEA Blanda bowls, is the diameter and thickness of the flat bases, 152mm diameter and 15mm thick, so pretty simple to mount a variety of drive units. On the downside it does mean there is a larger flat surface, parallel to the drive unit, at the back of the enclosure.
I've no great expertise with speakers so so do you guys have any thoughts on whether the internal surfaces need to be damped with felt/foam/bitumen pads/whatever? I'm assuming I'll experiment with stuffing when I get them playing music.
I hope to make some more progress with the project over the coming weekend.

As I mentioned in my initial post, the bowls were an impulse purchase at a close down sale of a UK-based chain of stores - I bought the last four from my local store. I don't know if they're available elsewhere. They're about 25cm diameter.Who makes those bowls?
I see there are many, but most of them are small.
I've been making sawdust this afternoon!
I glued an extra 20mm layer of acacia wood to the base of the rear pair of bowls with the intention of making the speakers a bit more egg shaped. I''ve just been shaping the extra layers, blending it into the bowl and rounding off the port opening.
I rough shaped with my power plane, then refined with a surform before working down through the grades of abrasive.

The project is coming together nicely.
Both pairs of bowls now glued together - external sanding and finishing next.

I've been making sawdust again today, sanding back to bare wood and fairing the joins. To completely fair the joins is going to entail removing too much wood so I have to think of how to disguise them without detracting from the wood finish.I have some very thin carbon fibre sheet so I'm thinking of glueing a strip over each join but open to any suggestions..

I've glued on some veneer strips to hide the filler around the joins, generated yet more sawdust and have just applied the first coat of finish.
