Annoying hummmmm

Hello.

I have a problem driving me insane..I have recently change the PU on my Pro-Ject RPM 1.3, and after, there is this incredible humm which goes up and down with the volume control. So much in fact, that I am bothered when listening at night, or at adequate levels anytime, actually, when there is silence on the record, there is humm in my speaker. It is grounded between player and riaa, but when I touch the groundpost on the player, the humm subsides quite alot, when I only hover my finger above the groundpost,it gets worse..

Any ideas?

Confirm that all 4 leads are properly connected to the cartridge. That means that they follow the color code correctly. There should be a hot side and a ground side for each channel. They shouldn't be reversed. Usually one of the ground wires goes to the cartridge body to ground the cartridge shield. You might try shorting the outputs of the cartridge with 2 small strands of wire. If that doesn't kill the hum (It will also kill the sound output) then suspect broken continuity of one of the 4 wires through the tonearm. Is there an extra ground lead beyond the 2 audio coaxs? cConfirm that it is well connected to the preamp input.

The answer will be in one of these issues.

Good luck,
David S.
