commercial amps

You need to update your personal profile to show where you live. I saw a Peavey 160W PA amp (bar sound) for $100 east of Nashville last week on craigslist. If you don't have a preamp, and don't use magnetic phono cartridge LP's, then a powered mixer would fit your needs nicely,it has the inputs and outputs all in one box, usually $200-$600 used. Some brands are easier to fix than others, look at the threads for people looking for unavailable schematics for some brands to figure out which ones not to buy.

ratings war

Powered mixers often have a 200 W amp built in. Packaged receivers were notorious in my youth for the volume controls and tone controls going bad in just over one year. Professional mixer brands selling successfully to bars typically buy more expensive controls that last longer. Note that power ratings change depending on the speaker impedance. Some brands have the power in the product name, but it is rated at 2 ohms or 1 ohm, and there is a very limited selection of speakers of that impedance. Older brands rate the power at 4 or 8 ohms. I am on this site not as a designer of circuit boards, but as a repairer of used equipment that I couldn't afford new. My 1968 organ, for example, cost more than a 1968 Mustang convertible when new. It needed $250 in parts to perform as advertised, and I'm not done yet.
