AMIGA MT vs 2.5 CA18RNX

Hello,
I am about to upgrade my audio setup. I did a pair of SEAS MIMIR 10 years ago that I want to change for a floorstander.

Here you told me that Troels Gravesen designed a floorstander with the same woofers and (almost) the same tweeters than the MIMIR. All I have to do is to by a pair of new CA18RNX and build a (quite expensive) crossover.

The thing is that, as mentionned, my speakers are 10 years old and I whish my next project to last at least 10 more years. I am wondering if they could handle another decade?
While I was digging the internet I found Paul Carmody's AMIGA MT, so called "boutique HiFi killer". It seems to fit my needs with inexpensive speakers and crossover.

Talking about my needs: good response at low levels and with better kick and bass than the MIMIR. Price is also a concern as I don't want to go over 500€ with crossover and wood.

Do you see a clear winner between these 2 options?
Do you think that they could be powered by a TPA3255 amp?

Any advices/criticisms are welcomed!

There may be an issue with efficiency: in Paul's write up of his TRS-80 (same RS180 woofer) he notes that they run out of puff at about 95dB, is that something you need to consider? The SEAS TMM will likely have higher output.

Nothing against the Amigas, from all accounts they're excellent speakers. Simple crossover, too. There are heaps of designs for RS180 and RS180P MTMs with higher efficiency, however, the tweeter height might be an issue in that configuration.

Not heard either of these but the Troels 2.5 way is 88-89db vs the 83-84db sensitivity of the Amiga; equivalent to doubling your amp power. Impedance of both is not much different from the Mimir, so if your current amp can handle that, then I think the 2.5way is a better long term choice.

You don't have to spend as much on the XO components; Troels likes expensive caps and coils, but on the design you listed, the schematic is open so you can get whatever compatible parts you want.

I listen more often at low levels than high. To be fair, music is on at low/medium volume whenever I'm at home with my family. And I have some listening session when I'm alone, at higher volume.
The MIMIR are not the best at low/medium volume, giving a sluggish feeling.
I plan to change my current amp as well (ATOLL IN100)

Why not drop Paul Carmody a line and ask his opinion on adding a .5 woofer to the Amiga?
He says he doesn't want to answer this kind of questions for family reasons. I fully understand that.

wolf_teeth If you want a small TMM tower, my EMP will suffice, and should have more than enough output.
~$340 in drivers, and the xover isnt awful...

I'll give a look, thanks!

As said before I prefer a higher sensitivity. Thanks for the advice for the XO

All in all, you don't consider reusing the speakers as a major issue?

Unless the speakers or surrounds are damaged, or have been over-driven and damaged that way, they should be fine: I have speakers which were 25 years old and still sounded OK.
Others on this Forum may have different experiences.
